Remembering Bill Lango on Veterans Day.

Bill served his country proudly during the Cuban Missile Crisis aboard Navy destroyer USS Mullinnix.

Bill Lango and fellow "snipes" in their favorite watering hole on the infamous "strip." The "strip" was the 4 or 5 blocks of sailor's Disney Land between D&S Piers and the main gate. That's Bill on the far right. When's the last time you had a Pabst Blue Ribbon?

"Snipes?" Learn why the navy men in charge of the engines were called Snipes:=> https://navydads.com/profiles/blogs/why ... -is-snipes

Edit 1: Correction, Mullininix was a destroyer, not a battleship.

Brittny Spears looks pretty good for 40. I'm old enough to remember when she was a cute little girl and a Mouseketeer.

Thanks for sharing those photos. As a landlubber, isn't that a destroyer, not a battleship? Thanks to Bill and his family for starting and maintaining this website.

Thank you Neil. Of course you are correct. I stupidly copied the words from Bill's obituary.

Pabst Blue ribbon is all the rage. A trendy beer with the gearheads. About 10-15 years ago it became popular again. Now the make a hard coffee.

I suspect "long-ranged" is more accurate.

Pennsylvania, one of the "standard" battleships built for the USN during WWI, was relatively slow compared to the BBs built shortly before and during WWII. Missouri, the last BB completed for the USN, had a flank speed of some 33 knots. While that's not destroyer speed, it's not far off. Her class and the South Dakotas were rockets by comparison.

Interestingly, the Wik reports that Mullinnix was used in the filming of a Twilight Zone episode where divers are sent down to examine a ship sunk decades earlier. A strange rapping sound, similar to that possibly made by men trapped inside, was reported to have been heard. I remember that episode, and it creeped me out big time.

I recall a show of similar vintage, where the guys were trapped and they passed the time playing poker until the end. Divers heard the sound of the poker game going on. Spooky...you bet! That's my memory of it, but then these days, my memory and a buck will get you coffee! No idea of what show it might have been!

Hi All

Been a while. Was putting up one of my dad's coffee mugs on the small shelf above the wood stove and found my tin cup made for me by one of the forum members many years ago. I can't recall who but it is a fond memory. I remember the toasts on Christmas eve out of the tin cups and Tramp's and Daisy's tree. Always spectacular.

Anyways stay safe everyone.
