Quora
Question: People who own Teslas and charge their cars in their garage, is your electric bill huge? Do those cars require a lot of energy?

Answer:
Ronald R. McConico
Executive Director (2004–present)

I own a Tesla and I bought it because I had a limo business. The 1st car I was using for a limo was a Chrysler 300. It cost me about $800 a month in fuel maintenance and oil changes. I bought a Tesla model S P85 when I charge that at home on a separate meter from my house meter it cost me a $150 a month.. Minnesota has a special rate if you charge off peak and install a separate meter. So I always know exactly what my Tesla cost is in electricity. I sold the limo business but kept the Tesla and now the cost may be between $47 and $59 a month to charge my car. My off peak rate is 03/kwh. And I haven't changed my brakes or had an oil change in over a 180,000 miles.

Founded in 2009, Quora is a social network based around knowledge. Users of the site may post questions, which anyone may then answer.

Ronald said, "My off peak rate is 03/kwh."

Hours and costs
You'll pay about 12 cents a kilowatt-hour during on-peak hours, about 8 cents a kilowatt-hour during off-peak hours (slightly lower than the standard residential rate of $0.08384) and about 6 cents a kilowatt-hour during super-off-peak hours.

Wayne, While getting this information is there any on battery life for these electric cars.

Can new battery packs be installed if these die. I believe the whole bottom of these cars are the battery and you would have to remove the body to replace the batteries.

A lot of people keep there gas engines vehicles for many years.

What happens if the battery pack dies. Is that the end of life cycle for an electric car. ?

Actually if you read Wayne's post carefully........you'd still be thinking about it all until smoke came out of your head...and you could ask that same question of yourself...........but I could be making that up to answer a Russian AI bot.

Correct, Rufus, my initial post was a lie. $0.03 is the discount Roland gets on his $0.12/kwh electric bill for charging during off-peak hours. Roland also did not consider the surcharges on his bill.

Here is an example from my April electric bill.
ENERGY CHARGE (.08635 X 818 kWh) $70.63
CONSUMER SURCHARGE $17.50
FUEL ADJUSTMENT SURCHARGE (.01304 X 818 kWh) $10.67
ENVIRONMENTAL SURCHARGE (8.68%) $8.58
SCHOOL TAX-ADAIR SURCHARGE 3% $3.22
TOTAL CURRENT BILL DUE 05/06/23 $110.60

I believe all EV car batteries are replaceable.

Tesla claims: Tesla batteries are supposed to last for 300,000 to 500,000 miles, or 1,500 battery cycles, whichever comes first.

Cycle life data usually comes from the battery manufacturer. Your experience may vary. For example, my 2,000-charge cycle rated lithium-ion battery jump start pack lasted two years and two charge cycles when stored in the vehicle in the Sonoran Desert. It failed to start someone's car on the third use and would not take a third charge. I also carry jumper cables so I was able to get Mr. Someone's car started using my truck's battery.

Not for long...GM just announced they are discontinuing the Bolt, despite its strong sales numbers for the EV segment.

That's a bit less than the 4 tanks of gas I was burning just commuting to work every month; I do not miss that commute!

That would seem probable, yet......for how many years will manufacturers really stock such items going forward? Getting to 300,000 to 500,000 miles could be a long time for many people.

Batteries might outlast the rest of the car? Used batteries might be a commodity going forward.

Barra claims there's something in the works; I'm guessing a full-electric Equinox or Trailblazer. The Americans are SUV-obsessed. If you want a sedan, you're headed for the imports. I've been a long-time GM guy, but I think I'm finally over them. My guess, EVs will go the same way as eBooks. Unless something drastic happens with the charging infrastructure, they'll penetrate maybe forty percent of the market and that's it. Just my guess...

That or a pickup.

Was just talking about that with my wife - rare to see a commercial for sedans....other than from Lucid,
It's all about SUVs and pickups.
