I lived in California for 30 years 1950 to 1980. And I have said it before it was a fabulous place to grow up for a young person. I have no regrets. Spent many hours on the beaches from Redondo/ Manhattan to Playa Del Ray Surfun in the daytime and beach parties at night. Lived in Hawthorne. where I graduated from high school Went to school with the guys that later became the Beach Boys. Spent many hours cruising Hawthorne Blvd burning up 30 cent a gallon gas.
What more could a young person ask for. Fun FUN Fun. the beaches , hot cars and hot girls. I married a California girl. She was born in Hawthorne. Bought our first house in Hawthorne when we got married. Around 1970 the state bought the house because we were in the path of the new Century freeway. Moved to Garden Grove.
When it comes to aircraft I worked for Airearch Aviation at LAX. Executive aircraft like the DH125, Falcon 10/20s Lockheed Jet stars and Grumman Gulf streams 1/2&3 Doing custom interiors. In the late 60s we bid on and got the contract to do the upstairs lounge lounge and 1st class in the nose of Pan AMs 747s They were the kickoff customer for the plane. The company opened up a new facility to do the work close to Long Beach. I went with the new facility, We kept getting more work with the airlines. As the company expanded I became the supervisor of the plastic shop Had about 50 people under me and I was just in my mid 20s at the time.
Didn't leave Calif because of politics. It was just getting too over populated and expensive for our comfort zone.
In 1977 I joined the western division of TCA and then 2 chapter of TTOS and a smaller MTA. I still had all my trains that my dad bought for me after WW2. They were all prewar tinplate. Still have everything to this day.
We drove out to Calif in 2010. where we flew out of John Wayne airport to Hawaii and took the cruise around the Islands. When we got back we visited with many friends that we hadn't seen in years. drove through the old neighborhoods and by the high schools we went to. The houses we lived in now have bars on the windows and doors with security fences. The high schools look like minimum security prisons. And all the businesses on Hawthorne blvd have closed.
What happened to the great place that i used to live in. None of our friends that we went to school with they don't live around there any longer. I remember my 10 year reunion was quite somber. They had a memorial list of all the guys I went to school with that had been killed in Vietnam.
Johnson war where we lost over 50 thousand young men, because why. They never attacked us....
