Coronavirus:

Postby HONDO74 » Sun Feb 09, 2020 10:34 am

I don't remember anything about the SARs back in 2003

Coronavirus: Thousands on cruise ship allowed to disembark after tests

The coronavirus has now killed more people than Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome). In 2003, that epidemic killed 774 people in more than two dozen countries.

In the Chinese province of Hubei alone, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, the death toll is now put at 780 by regional health officials. More than 34,800 people have been infected worldwide, the vast majority in China.

Coronavirus to axe $280B from global wealth engine

The fast-spreading coronavirus is likely to paralyze the global economy for the early part of this year.

“Our best guess is that the economic disruption related to the coronavirus will cost the world economy over $280 billion in the first quarter of the year,” Simon MacAdam, global economist at London-based Capital Economics, wrote in a note to clients on Friday. “If we’re right, then this will mean that global GDP will not grow in quarter-to-quarter terms for the first time since 2009.”

The speed and voracity with which the so-called Wuhan coronavirus is spreading prompted New York-based economists at JPMorgan Chase to slash their first-quarter economic growth forecasts for China to 1 percent – more than five percentage points below their pre-outbreak estimate.

A more adverse scenario -- in which the contagion doesn’t peak until April and factories remain closed for at least a week beyond their current Feb. 10 reopening date, extending disruptions in production, transportation and shipping -- would cause the Chinese economy to contract by 3.9 percentage points, the bank projected.

The slowdown in China, the world’s second-largest economy, will serve as a headwind to U.S. growth, which was expected to see a boost from the partial trade agreement with Beijing signed last month.

Latest film of China still shows a ghost town country - re-opening anything tomorrow seems unlikely. This is an all stop, not a slow down. Ramping anything back up takes some time and is going to have real impact on the world economy. Volkswagen is closed until the 17th. Hyundai is closed in Korea - parts shortage.

Passed 800 dead now; probably very under-counted in case numbers, too. Overwhelming testing abilities..... Cases in Britain and Spain now. Map shows that there are cases in other countries and have not seen any reports out of many. More on the ship in Japan....

Americans in coronavirus quarantine were flown from Wuhan on cargo planes with no windows and flight crews dressed in full hazmat suits

The US government is asking all US citizens living in the epicenter of the outbreak to evacuate the city as soon as possible and has organized flights out of the region to select military bases in the US.

I did read about a new born with the virus, but nothing about the mother one way or the other.

You can speculate as much as you want. Think, however, about taking that plane trip wearing a hazmat suit.......no fun wearing those!

Five Britons contract coronavirus in French ski resort
https://news.yahoo.com/five-britons-inf ... 48612.html

LES CONTAMINES-MONTJOIE, France/PARIS (Reuters) - Five British nationals including a child have been diagnosed with the new coronavirus at a French mountain village, and health officials said they were checking who else might have been exposed, including at local schools.

In total, 11 people, including the five who tested positive, have been hospitalised in southeastern France and were being examined, the French health ministry said on Saturday, adding that none were in serious condition.

The group of Britons included holidaymakers and a family currently residing in the Alpine village and ski resort, Les Contamines-Montjoie.

They shared neighbouring apartments in a chalet and temporarily hosted a British man believed to have contracted the virus at a business congress in Singapore before his short visit to France in late January, the ministry added.

Two schools would be shut next week for checks, regional health official Jean-Yves Grall said, after it emerged that the nine-year-old who tested positive had attended lessons and French classes in different establishments.

Two other children were also part of the group of 11 now in hospital in the cities of Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Grenoble, and they had been schooled in the area too, according to Etienne Jacquet, mayor of Les Contamines-Montjoie.

As usual, not in context.

Yes. Happens every year and a lot of it could be prevented. Not unlike a lot of preventable deaths in this country that we shrug off as "acceptable".

Just under 10 million cases - .01% death rate. Might want to think about that to put it all in context

Coronavirus looks to be ~2% death rate - with 10 million cases, well, you do the math.

Japan confirms 39 new coronavirus cases on cruise ship

Japan confirmed 39 new cases of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, on a cruise ship quarantined at one of its ports, bringing the total number infected on the vessel to 174, health officials said Tuesday.

Cruise ships are kind of like a floating petri dish
