Venezuela crisis: A health system in a state of collapse

President Nicolas Maduro promised Venezuelans free medical treatment for all - but hospitals are now only able to offer a bed and little else.

Hospital staff and families of patients say the health service has crumbled, neglected by the government over the last five years.

Now there is barely running water, let alone enough medicines, as the BBC's Orla Guerin reports.

My parents met while they were both working in Venezuela. The place was ruled by a dictator back then, too. Ironic, since it was the birthplace of Simon Bolivar.

My wife and I were in Aruba in June for our 30th anniversary. When we got to the rocky beach on the undeveloped side of the island while on a horseback tour, the guide mentioned that Venezuelans desperate to leave the country were constantly trying to come ashore in small, rickety boats. The waters and shoreline were treacherous and a large number did not make it. He said few bodies wash ashore due to the large number of sharks in those waters. Pretty sad.
