“The Bike-Share Oversupply in China: Huge Piles of Abandoned and Broken Bicycles,” showing just some of the millions of bicycles that had been rapidly built and dumped into Chinese cities by bike-share companies looking to get in on the next big thing, only to crash hard.

Saw that story last week and the pictures.......good source of scrap metal.

China's bike-sharing companies have hit a roadblock.

The companies allow customers to unlock a bicycle using only a smartphone, ride it around town, and then leave it at their destination.



Accidents happen. Run into a curb, bend the wheel? Not your bike, just use your smartphone to tell the bike-share company where you left it and request your deposit back.



As companies fold, some customers have reported trouble getting their rental deposits back. Shuting Wang, a 25-year-old management consultant in Beijing, says she lost approximately 200 yuan ($30) to Bluegogo.

I think that DC already does have such a system in place.

Don't they have programs to minimize bike sharing? One has to wonder how many have died, sharing bicycles.

I would have thought that troops - no , battalions - of homies and hoodies would have been out there stealing the bikes the moment the very first few made their appearance in places like NYC , but I have not seen mention of that phenomenon on the News as yet.

$8-Daily Pass
The Daily Pass provides an unlimited number of 30-minute trips for 24 hours. Before your 30-minutes are up you must get the bike into any TuGo station to avoid over-30-minute charges. You may then take it out immediately for another 30-minute ride on our pass without incurring additional charges (as long as your pass has not expired.)

For trips that extend beyond 30 minutes, users pay $4 for each additional 30-minute period.

$18-Monthly Pass provides unlimited 30-minute trips for 30 days. Trips over 30 minutes incur a $2 fee for each additional 30-minute period.

$80-Annual Pass provides unlimited 30-minute trips for one year. Trips over 30 minutes incur a $2 fee for each additional 30-minute period.

A security deposit of $24 is immediately charged to your credit card when you buy a pass. Some of it is refunded it your charges are less than $24 for the time period you have the bicycle out of a rack.

A lost or stolen bike fee is $1,200.

Washington DC's Bike Share company is called Capital BikeShare. They have 395 stations and 4686 bicycles.

Tucson's Bike Share company is called TUGO. They have 36 stations and 330 bicycles.

Who is TUGO?

Tugo has not had a theft yet. Should one be ripped out of a Tugo station the bicycle locks up.

Should anyone report the bicycle they rented was stolen, Tugo sends a remote signal to the stolen bicycle causing it to lock up.

The manufacturer of the $2.36 million Baltimore Bike Share system said his company has never experienced the level of theft that caused officials to announce a temporary shutdown of the program to allow additional locking devices to be installed to the bike docks.

The original locks on the bike stations were overwhelmed by thieves ripping the bicycles out at an unprecedented pace, said Alain Ayotte, CEO of Bewegen Technologies, the Canadian manufacturer.

“We don’t have this issue anywhere else, not at this level,” Ayotte said Wednesday. “Our locking system is recognized [as] very, very up to industry standard, but due to the issues that occurred in Baltimore this summer, we did add additional security.”

Stealing and vandalism are ways of life in this system of things.

If you get caught stealing a bike in China, they cut your fingers off....

One should never underestimate the ability ("...overwhelmed by thieves ripping the bicycles out at an unprecedented pace...") of the self-absorbed, self-entitled evil ones to commit mayhem and harm to others. Certain neighborhoods in such cities as Baltimore and Detroit are testimony and, likely, at least the partial answer to how such damage to that company was able to be effected. Certainly , not a single one of the miscreants created and operated a company of his own that legitimately rivaled that bike company in any normal, competitive way.
