Whatzit?

Pipevine swallowtail, Battus philenor
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Made it race against time.

No.
It is a dark morph of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.
As I pointe out in the first photo, "Here in Columbia they already look beat-up in September."
This specimen has part of the wings between the tails ripped out.
Here is one that is not so beat-up.

Looks like a subject for Georgie O'Keeffe.

Re: Whatzit?
Not a color shifter. Kentucky has 25.862 million acres of these blue flowers and one with white flowers (based on my limited observations.) I found the one while one while bicycling around our property yesterday.

Re: Whatzit?
Blue ones look a lot like what I mowed off last week around my cabin, and that's my limited knowledge of what they might be be - mowed!

Seems linked to the switch as well. Maybe for reversing small engines to run around the trains? I see gearing but nothing obvious for actuating that gearing to rotate the section.
