Will there be a trade war with China ?? I don't know, but here is something I found interesting about the latest tit for tat.

China has announced they are going to impose a 25% tariff on pork from the US. Hmmm. Looks like they are going to penalize one of their on companies.

In 2013,a Chinese conglomerate now known as WH Group bought Smithfield Foods, the largest pork producer in America for $7.1 billion, the largest-ever foreign takeover of its kind."pork is considered a national-security issue in China."

Today, Smithfield sends more than a quarter of its pork abroad, especially to China, which received nearly 300,000 tons in 2016. Part of what made the company such an attractive target is that it's about 50 percent cheaper to raise hogs in North Carolina than in China.

This is what is behind the current contretemps. The Chinese are attempting to leverage themselves to world economic dominance on the back of stolen American innovation.

I think a trip to Vegas would provide far more rational investment opportunities for you than any "ownership" stake you might acquired in a Chinese company. In fact, a dice game in a downtown alley is probably far more lucrative and safe an investment opportunity.

No. They have already done all that quite successfully; however, they also have their own areas of innovation that the US is falling behind in quite rapidly as we slowly but surely kill research and development off in this country.

Well, Rufus, if American colleges would actually educate students instead of indoctrinating them, maybe, just maybe, there would be enough graduates smart enough to pursue research and development. Of course, that would assume that high school graduates are actually higher education material. Asians, (from nearly any country), outperform Americans when it comes to education. That said, I will admit some of the foreigners do go to USC and MIT, then go home with a superior education to be used against us. We're our own worst enemy.

It's not a question of smart enough and the endless indoctrinating BS - there's no jobs and no money for research. It's been on a downward spiral for 17 years now.

Of course, that would assume that high school graduates are actually higher education material.

Sadly the dilution of our high school curriculums across this country accompanied with a terrible downgrading of anything related to science is producing graduates that can barely balance their bank accounts and spell their own names.

Asians, (from nearly any country), outperform Americans when it comes to education. That said, I will admit some of the foreigners do go to USC and MIT, then go home with a superior education to be used against us. We're our own worst enemy.

Sadly, some truth there and again we've diluted and dismantled our public school systems to the point where student spend the 1st year in remedial courses. Those foreigners used to stay here since this is where the jobs were; they go home now because their countries recognize their value and pay them better than we do.

And "over there" which is becoming increasingly every where else but here. Since we are so short sighted and going for the cash up front, we are becoming increasingly vulnerable to having the IP bought out right from under our noses.

The funding for basic research is way down both in the public and private sectors. Companies dump their R&D departments to make the short term bottom line like look good and to boost the head honcho's bonuses. When they are actually challenged on this by the more astute investors they "assure" them that they will "buy" the research material they need from smaller companies. Since they couldn't manage/recognize basic research when it was in house what makes them a) think they can recognize it from a distance, b) that someone with more money won't beat them to the punch (aka someone from "over there").

I think that the stealing might be more related to existing patented IP being violated and there being no real recourse to recoup that loss.
