MI&S Co.???

Years ago one of my co-workers bought some property in Sunbury NC. One day he brings me a 3' piece of light rail he dug up out of his yard:

It's 2-1/2" high and has the letters - MI&S Co. embossed on the side.

Only thing I can find on MI&S Co. is the Missouri, Inland & Southern Railway Co., but what would a piece of their track be doing in North Carolina?!?!?!

About the only RR I know of that went thru Sunbury was the Suffolk & Carolina Rwy, which I think was narrow-gauge. Here's a map showing the S&C route, Sunbury is just below Corapeake in the center of the map in Gates County:

The S&C became the Virginia & Carolina Coast Railroad in 1906, which was then absorbed into the Norfolk & Southern, which was then re-organized as the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

I figure it must be at least 100 years old.

Anyway, I was thinking about making some bookends out of a couple of pieces of the rail, maybe even a doorstop with the leftover

I've been searching all week and found nothing on it other than what I said in my original post, but Dave is most likely right.

Did RRs (other than PRR) make their own rail?

I think this is 30 lb rail. The Suffolk & Carolina was originally a 3'-6" gauge RR, later being converted to standard gauge.

I might make 2 bookends and clean/polish up the rest of the rail for display.

I would not mind having "Winky". I thought that it was neat but, back then, never had the scratch to get one.

My first job was a draftsman in a machine shop, we used to sit around at lunch and peruse the latest JC Whitney catalog, always had a few laughs at some of the things they offered.

Remember these, we called them Jughead hats?:

I thought about getting one to use in some kind of park monument but it was/is just a little too large. They were about two or so inches in diameter, if I remember; plus, again they were a tad bit pricey.
