Depends on what you're gonna' do with the truck, show piece or daily driver? Want to keep the emission equipment legal? There are intake manifolds that can retain the EGR valve but still have a higher plenum and longer runners to feed the bigger heads. The Edelbrock Performer RPM, for example. There are bigger throttle bodies available, for sometimes less money than a new Holley or Edelbrock carb. The throttle body from a 454 would work with an available adapter plate. Holly also makes bolt on TBs, and are reasonably priced from the discount houses. If by chance it runs a little too lean, there are aftermarket chips available to fatten 'er up a bit. That's one thing about the small block Chevy, everything is interchangeable. If you stay with injection, that means you have to have the Oxygen sensor(s) for fuelcontrol feedback. The PCM should work with the bigger throttle body and injectors, because in closed loop the O2 sensors grab control of the engine. I'd go with the shorter runner headers with O2 capability, and have a custom dual exhaust system made with twin free flow 2 way catalysts, into a set of FlowMax mufflers. It'll sound lean and mean, but won't blow your eardrums out inside the cab.
One thing to remember: All that chrome and polish(external) costs a lot of money and WON'T make it run any better.

I never fooled with the sixes much except to rip 'em out and put in a V8, but my Dad had a '54 Chevy 1/2 ton that had a small 6 in it. I can't remember the size, but think it was smaller than 200 inches. F*#ker had vacuum wipers and with not enough power to climb a hill here in western Pa, the cab would fill up with smoke comin' in through the floor mounted starter pedal, and vacuum would drop and the wipers would quit 'til 'ya shifted to 2nd and got the vacuum back up. The Old Man got disgusted with it and we got a 248 out of a GMC milk truck, ripped the governor off, and set that baby in there. Big difference when goin' from not bein' able to pull a sick whore off a piss pot, to bein' able to tow a car up the same hill at 30 mph.
As for "poured rod bearings", this was called babbit. If you insist on keepin' the original engine, I'd bet money that later model rods that can use a standard type rod bearing would fit right in there. Chevy is very interchangeable. Best bet would be to get an early '70s 296c.i. and rebuild it. The early ones had a separate intake manifold, the later the intake was part of the head. (Problems). Paint the engine the original GM color and almost nobody would know the difference.

The Dirt had himself a proud day yesterday.
Airborne was asked to join an invitation-only mid-season tournament in our local AYSO, American Youth Soccer Organization.
Our all-stars won the first game, tied the second after being 1-1 at the end of regulation, (we got a tying-goal with 20 seconds left after they scored quickly in OT). We then got spanked by the team that won overall 
, so we had to have a playoff game for 2nd place with the team we tied. In a tense and exciting game, parents elated and despairing with every reversal of fortune, we scored the go-ahead goal with 2 minutes to play, then held them off 
.
It was 85 degrees, we were there from 7:30 AM to 3:10 PM
, (it was supposed to end at noon), the kids were worn out, we were all hot, sweaty, and sunburned, but the kids were thrilled, and the parents were thrilled! It was a good day indeed!
