Perhaps this is the apposite moment to point out that you initiated the personal insults, not me? I've said lots of insulting things about our president and some of his apparatchiks, but I don't recall him being part of the conversation. If you took that personally, tough nuggies. But in terms of insulting people personally, you and Hondo have initiated all of the vile personal behavior. I've been rather restrained, by NYC standards, compared to both of you. You might want to do a little self-examination, although that's not the strength of passionate Republicans .

A little insight if you are interested. I am not a political person. Yes, I'm a registered Democrat, but that's because the Republicans keep nominating members of the populace who are more like Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon than like Mitt Romney, George H. Bush and John McCain. A string of war mongers (George W. Bush) (Goldwater), suck ups to the rich (Reagan), etc. The Democratic candidates are only marginally better until this year, where Biden looks like the Second Coming compared with Donald Trump.

I am not interested in ideology. I am a practical person who believes it is the role of government to promote the common interest, protect the weak and succor those who are suffering. My texts of greatest importance are not the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and they certainly aren't Das Kapital or Mein Kampf. My texts of choice are the writing of John Stuart Mill (look him up, he was a liberal whose ideas are at the core of our American experiment ). and the New Testament. I am not a practicing Christian but I definitely resonate with Jesus's message as reported a 100 years later or so by his disciples.

So how to support a party and nominee (i.e., Trump) who totally neglects the poor and suffering in favor of the wealthy?

I am not a Democrat. I am a humanist who believes our highest goals should be to protect the weak, succor the suffering, promote the general welfare and safety of our people. The Electoral College and the Senate, founded solely to preserve slavery and Southern interests in the late 1780s, need to go so that the people, mostly working class and middle class, can have a defining voice in their future.

Trump needs to go because, like me, he's a pragmatist. But he's a pragmatist whose highest value is preserving his own power, preferably unlimited power. He doesn't care about anyone but Trump and if playing up to terrorists and madmen on the right help him, he's fine with that. I'm a pragmatist who wants to see a leader who makes decisions for the poor and the suffering. Who protects people and freedom. Trump ain't that leader.

How would you help the poor and suffering? Can it be made fair. Will the lazy get weeded out? It's no fun to watch somebody struggle. It's not fair to support them for life. It's also not fair to watch somebody file bankruptcy a dozen times. Right there is a law that needs to get changed. I'll bet you. you cant find 20 politicians that would change bankruptcy laws to stop that!

I'm not sure that more laws are the answer. We already have enough laws to literally fill libraries. Just because something is "legal" does not mean it's just.

What has happened is we have disconnected the laws from justice. We have hidden justice almost to the point of obscurity behind a web of contradictory laws so much so that the resulting mess is almost untenable. Everyone screams about their rights but no one is willing to accept their responsibilities as members of a larger community. The laws are written and applied by the people in power to protect themselves. So long as judges and lawyers treat this as some elaborate game where the rules are paramount even when they are contradictory we aren't going to get far in getting out this mess.

I said the Democratic candidates were only slightly better than the Republicans (except in the case of Der Fuhrer-Biden is Christlike compared with this human train wreck). Also the Democratic presidents often had a Republican controlled House or Senate or both which makes getting stuff done difficult. Republicans, as a broad generalization, want to spend money on nothing, or perhaps tax cuts for the very wealthy , the military and such. Not generally on health care, education, scientific research, the arts, the poor, the middle class. Perhaps if the Democrats take both the Presidency and the Senate and retain control of the House something will be done about the pressing issues, as was the case in the New Deal. Which was, in general, terrific, addressed the crisis of the Depression, and, unsurprisingly, rabidly opposed by the Republican party and its Supreme Court. But FDR whipped them in line.

All the time I lived in California and up into the mid 90s I was a registered democrat. Bill Clinton and Janet Reno convinced me I was in the wrong party. But I didn't change until we moved to our present location. Being a registered democrat I used to get all kinds of liberal democrat propaganda in the mail. Now I get Conservative Republican propaganda in the mail. Much easier to deal with and it still all goes in the trash.

Being that I was a JFK democrat I actually voted for Johnson. I thought he would be the same. Well there’s your first mistake. If you believe in the teachings of Jesus you sure wouldn’t be making that statement. He commands his disciples to do that very thing while railing against the Pharisees and Sadducees. Are you a disciple Neil? If that’s what you believe than why would you heap that burden on another that may not believe the same way you do? The problem is that the govt proves over and over again that it mismanages everything it touches combined with alleged ‘poor’ people who work the system. But if that’s how you feel than you are free to give whatever you want from Neils medical practice. I’m sure living in NY there is no shortage of people that you can freely help as you see fit. Maybe you have a spare bedroom at your place.

Btw you may want to read chapter 25. I believe it may even influence your political beliefs.
