I don't see a problem here. We probably have at least a hundred thousand south the border on their way here. They will be more than happy to take all those jobs that Americans won't do and they work cheap.HEY it beats the hell out of starving to death where they presently live.

Most are uneducated so they are not going take away any of those high paying jobs. Twice in the last 12 years the roof on my house has been replaced due to hail storms. The guy that does my roofing live 5 blocks from me. I asked him about his hired help and said these were the only people he could get to do the job. It's hard work. They don't get paid by the hour. They are paid by the amount of shingles they can put down. They bust their a$$E$ to get it done so they can move on to the next house.

The owner said he hands out some big paychecks and these guys have never seen that much money in their lives.

As Rufus once said. Hand them a shovel when they cross the border. There will be plenty of jobs available for them that Americans won't do.

W/o any benefits of any kind too probably - not worth all the complications. 40 hours & benefits - probably, good.

Different mindset these days. If I was ever unemployed after I was responsible for myself (single or married) I would have taken any job I could get from flipping burgers to digging ditches to support myself and my family. And, if parents are discouraging their children from working (40 hours + benefits or not) then they are just teaching the wrong message. It's always easier to get another job if you show your responsible and already have one.

Yes, and things are not what they were which has to be remembered. What was when we were young no longer exists.

Although, I disagree that it's always easier to get another job if you show your responsible and already have a job. Last thing an employer wants is anyone conflicted by having another job to distract an employee. They want 110% of your commitment to them over anything else......................and even if you hold down a less than 40 hours + benefits job and hold 2-3 30 hour jobs, you can't make ends meet.............and then you lose all of them when you are sick -- no sick leave and no health insurance. See how fast you are unemployed and not eligible for unemployment coverage.

So what can be done about this?
There have always been unemployed people and always will be.

You just summed it up. All that might be done is to minimize it.

It is a different world today and many companies today seem to prefer job jumpers and temps. But I also know from talking to my kids plus my nieces and nephews (most have had the same job for years) that companies do try to hang on to the good workers. It's still the lackadaisical "who cares" worker that companies don't want to retain. So, like many things in life, there are two sides to this discussion.

I don't have the answers, that's for sure.

Absolutely! But, good workers that can be replaced by cheaper good workers has been the norm for long time. That promotion is a pick slip; that new hire you're training is your replacement.

It's not rocket science to provide a safety net so no one lives in the street, goes hungry or does without basic health care. It's not all that expensive either, compared with the costs of national defense, building roads and bridges, etc. Simple, ethical behavior. Sure there will be some who manage to abuse the system. That's what the auditors are for. Find the doctors who are lying about disabilities and put them in jail :). Find the folks who cannot work but play golf three times a week and throw them off the social security disability program. It's not rocket science.

Neil,
I agree. Also you may mean this and implied this but also include those that use the system.

That safety net doesn't seem to be working to well in California with way over a hundred thousand living on the street

Nobody has stated that it works well in its current form only that this is should not complicated to do; only complicated by individuals seeking to profit by it.

Being a doctor of your stature, you must have plenty of disposable income to start such a charity or organization to help the less fortunate. Combined with your white privilege that has allowed you to advance in life and have possessions such as model trains. It bewilders me to see you spending so much time on a model train forum when you could be caring for needy.

I think we all take recreation as we feel we need it. I wouldn't dream of suggesting to anybody when, where, and what that should be for them, especially not knowing all the many private factors that manifest as an individual's private self.
The word "private," like the word personal, would be the operative concept there .
