Jon, a pleasure talking with you tonight. Got home and checked my accounts. Just Trains hit my "online credit card" with the price of the engine ($909, fairy reasonable relative to the list of $1099) so I guess I am going to be the proud owner of a Hiawatha 4-4-2 Steam Locomotive, glossy or not. You will be the first to know my impression of it. It will probably arrive prior to your return from Fort Dogbutt. My guess is that the the passenger cars will be somewhat later. Gotta have that beavertail.
Much as we banter about in here, wish we all could talk in person more often.
Oh, the headers for the Magnum arrived. You would have lol about the conversation I had with Jahan about why I needed them.

Speaking from experence, 3 cans of American Water,,, err,, beer
Find a German restaurant, or German ethnic store near you, they should carry them.
Ya know why Germans say drinking American Beer is like having sex in a rowboat?
F%^*#! near water!

San:
I saw this in person at the local hobby shop today. It is magnificant. If it wasn't too big for my layout - even I would buy one. Seeing the "glossy" finish, I really can't envision it as being anything but that finish. While the engine is an absolute killer, the tender stands out as being a work of art.

San and Frank, you guys made my day!!!! I broke down and ordered the engine my dealer in Atlanta was "holding" for me, this afternoon. San, you got a better deal, Mine was $940.00 including shipping. Frank, I had been dying to actually see some photos of the dang engine for the last couple of weeks, thanks for coming through!!!!
OK, Switching gears on the Heiney tonight, Who's in for a Flying Dog Brewery-Tire Bite Golden Ale? (no shitting)

Jon, thank you for your continuing support of the economy.
Yeah, yeah. If it was'nt for the continuing support of this "hobby", I could be drinking Spaten with those three babes in Germany right now.
Are you installing those headers yourself, or are ya gonna have a shop do it? Hows that gonna change your air/fuel mixture? When my Brother out in Cali changed the pipes on his Harley he was hit with a 400.00 bill for fuel injector "chip" programming!!!! Ouch!! I guess long gone are the days of changing out a couple low and high speed jets in your garage!!!!

Weren't the real Hi's sort of glossy? I saw the Olympian[?] Hiawatha in Chicago in 1948 or 49 and remember that it was pretty shiny compared to others. This was at the Chicago Rail Road Fair. Ivisited both years.

Roger, I've seen B&W photos of the Hiawatha and it was certainly waxed and polished!!! The danger of doing that to a O scale locomotive is that it tends to look more like something that gets put under a Christmas Tree. That's why most scale manufacturers prefer a semi-gloss or better yet, a satin finish. Look at how Lionel's latest Burlington Zypher was laughed at as a "toy" because of the obscene shiney chrome finish applied to it.
In this photo, you can see a gloss finish on the Atlantic!!!! But- It appears to me the black certainly should have been flat rather then gloss, The biggest complaint about the engine so far, and I agree.

Jon,
Downside: with modified back pressure, pretty much the whole ignition/injection chain needs tuning to be optimal.
Upside: Brother in law has high end performance shop that tunes rides for Symbolic Motors.
He owes me big time and the loved one provides him with homemade baba ganoush. I perfer macaroni and cheese, but, whatever floats his boat and gets me tuneups.

PS: I am good to go with the gloss.

Regardless of your political polarity toward the left or right, you have to wonder how things got turned this upside down.

I remember the first time I made a business trip to Tokyo (I had been in Japan earlier while in the service). My father was still alive and asked "Whadya gonna do with those harbor bombers, son?"

Bush leaves on the eight-day trip on Tuesday. As a gesture of friendship to Russia, Air Force One will make a refueling stop in Moscow on its way to southeast Asia, where Bush is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Hanoi.
