The Strasburg Railroad's shop was shutdown by Pennsylvania's stay-at-home order, but they're going to reopen because they have received a substantial order for morgue carts for area hospitals. RYPN - The Latest from the Strasburg Rail Road Shops (April 11, 2020)

I don't know about panties, but there have been tutorials on converting bra cups into masks. Not as good as a surgical mask in terms of filtration capability but pretty good at effectively covering the nose and mouth plus the elastic strapping is already included.

I was clearing up some stuff looking for something and uncovered a respirator I bought about 30 years ago for some project that required a VOC filter. It's a half mask with the rubber mouth/nose covers and has twin activated charcoal filters and a one way center relief valve. The last time I used it was six or seven years ago for fall leaf pulverizing. I switched over to paper "plaster sanding" disposable masks. The particulate filter over the canisters are shot and I doubt that I can find replacements any time soon so I will make do with Filtrete Micro-Alergen vacuum bags and some HVAC register filters to replace them. Normally the filter covers are rated N, P, or R and usually have 100 rating. Actually a higher rating that the N95 recommended for Covid protection. R is not very common as it is oil Resistant and meant for single use. P id oil Proof and N means No oil.

The reason any mask is better than no mask is that the dose of virus on initial exposure plays a role in the severity of the clinical symptoms. Also, larger doses of virus probably penetrate further into the respiratory tract and are more likely to cause pneumonia. Those are the theories anyway, supported by animal model data for other respiratory viruses.

Yes, might also limit folks spewing forth all their own micro-droplets of everything into the air.....

I gather that part of the idea of the mask is to restrict the projection of fine droplets while speaking. How about incorporating an impermeable membrane, such as plastic or metal sheet, into the mask, in front of the mouth?

Doesn't have to be impermeable and absorbent might actually prove more effective.

Of course, there are always other options...

I meant impermeable to fine droplets. Of course, you'd need absorbency, too. And, breathability outside of the mouth area. Kind of like a modern diaper. Or, a Radley-Hunter smokestack.

Droplets are one of the reason health care workers wear goggles or, preferably, face shields when seeing patients, at least at this point. The failure to advocate masks and face shields early on led to so many health care workers getting infected. The combination is quite effective at preventing healthcare workers from getting exposed.

Yes. Preferably, on the outside of the mask.

You know the guy on TV who sells that rubber stuff? Like tool handle dip? Does it come in an aerosol spray? That might work even better.
