Oh, and I had already gotten all that I needed to learn about her, when, in the commercials for the show, they have the father sliding down a snowy hillside after falling in front of a monk on a hillside, and finally falling off a snow-cliff, right onto their encampment, next to/upon their tent, where the wife is taking "selfies." When he hits the ground, does she run over to see if he is injured, broke his neck, or dead? Nope. In true self-absorbed fashion, she contemplates her selfie, expressing satisfaction with herself. I am not entertained nor amused by seeing women who are vapid and vain ( at least we were spared her twirling the ends of her hair as she contemplated her self-image.) I see enough of that in the News.

I'll never watch that pile again.

Here's an idea - turn off the TV and read a book or 3.

Good idea. I have been. In fact, for several weeks, now, I have been editing a dear friend's new, first novel, and it has been a wonderful treat, intellectually and friendship-wise. Regarding other novels, I just about got "novel-ed-out" in undergrad endeavors, many years ago, making the mistake, contrary to my advisor's caution, of taking American Novel and English Novel courses during the same semester. Both professors assigned a novel per week. When I expressed my concern about having to read two books a week, to one of the professors, he said, and I quote exactly, from four+ decades ago, "Then, fail his course, but not mine. You WILL read the books."

That experience turned out to be good medicine for me because it helped keep me out of the beer-cong adventures 8) with my frat bros. and got me "A's" for two courses that I came to revel in. Next term, I signed up for the next level of both courses and felt real good about it. I needed the discipline and intellectual growth.
:D

Just asking some questions..

What is it about novels (fiction) that you people that read a lot of books find so interesting ?

But if you are reading someone Else's thoughts does that not influence your independent thinking. ?

A lot of people in this country use drugs for that. They probably don't have the capacity to read anything..

Your thoughts are always influenced by everything, but you should always still be in control, e.g., Interesting idea, but I think it's silly.

Since you read a lot of books how do you rate them. I suppose you find some authors to be to your liking and others not so much.

While I read a lot. It is mostly on the technical side. Some area that I am interested in. Can't say that I have ever been interested in fiction. Probably the last fiction book I read was in high school. Being that we moved so much in my younger years I was not a very good reader.

That changed around 1956 when someone gave me an issue of Hot Rod Magazine. I became interested in cars and began reading everything I could get my hands on.

It may. But that may be what we are looking for, stuff we hadn't thought of on our own.

Human beings have been enjoying stories since we drew some animals on some cave walls, like in Spain, and have sought explanations. Instructions or fantasies , we seek what others may know that we haven't figured out for ourselves.

I think that is part of being sentient beings. We wonder about stuff and know all the answers are not immediately apparent to ourselves alone.

Plus, I think we are, frankly, scaredshitless that the grave is the end of it all, that when it comes to Death, which of course comes for all of us, that worms, spiders, eagles, cows, horses, ants, etc. are no different than us, in that the end is the End. Kaput. Done. Story over. No epilogue. No denouement. Thud. Case closed.

Oorrrrrrrrrrrr.....

That's where the stories come in.

And we are given Hope for the best.

Though the book/novel is fictional, a great bulk of the material within can be based on, or be fact.

Kind of like watching a Hollywood movie that is based on facts or a real event but is 90% fictional. But when you read the book you have to use your own imagination as to what it looked like. Hollywood does that for you,

I just watch the movies for entertainment value.

I am all for anyone who likes to read books. Much, much better that watching that mindless TV as it exist today.. :D

I honestly do not know how bad such TV is for me. I mean, I just watched, while I ate my post-walk breakfast, a bit of "Hot Bench" :? and "Jerry Springer,"  and it barely gets more mindless than that (!) Yet, does everything have to be intellectually profound during a bit of recreational TV ?
