It seems that most schools have dropped spelling and pronunciation because, at least in parts of the south and I suspect more of the country, correct spelling didn't match actual use and if that if it is criticized egos may be damaged.

I did not think of that..

I have seen situations where the parent complained that a misspelled or misused word was close enough so it should be OK.
I have seen the same argument used on MTJ. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Nukeeler for nuclear?

That one is not limited to educational level achieved. Some very well educated people have trouble with that including a few former presidents that had advanced degrees in engineering/law.

I learned something new to me in the News tonight.
Nearby , are two communities of numerous Chinese-Americans, NYC and Belleville, NJ which are celebrating their New Year.

It is less proper , as far as they are concerned, to say they are celebrating the "Chinese New Year" and more acceptable and proper, from their perspective, to say they are celebrating the "Lunar New Year."

That preference is because the Chinese are not the only people of Asian heritage who are celebrating a New Year based on the Lunar Cycle, not the Gregorian calendar .

I was glad to learn this because it helps with propriety and consideration.

China bans BBC World News from broadcasting
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-56030340

China has banned BBC World News from broadcasting in the country, its television and radio regulator announced on Thursday.

China has criticised the BBC for its reporting on coronavirus and the persecution of ethnic minority Uighurs.

The BBC said it was "disappointed" by the decision.

It follows British media regulator Ofcom revoking state broadcaster China Global Television Network's (CGTN) licence to broadcast in the UK.

Separately, the broadcaster Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) said it would stop relaying BBC World Service programming in the region, prompting condemnation from the BBC.
'Curtailing freedom'

China's State Film, TV and Radio Administration said that BBC World News reports about China were found to "seriously violate" broadcast guidelines, including "the requirement that news should be truthful and fair" and not "harm China's national interests".

It said that the BBC's application to air for another year would not be accepted.

Very nice to read. Gratifying :

In the News:
Associated Press article:
"Fauci wins $1M prize for 'defending science' ...in the face of uninformed opposition ..."
The Dan David Prize for "...advocating for vaccines now being administered worldwide to fight the coronavirus pandemic."
The Israel-based Dan David Foundation

Joyous to see a dignified, empathetic, learned gentleman of science and medicine honored for efforts to help others, unconcerned about self-promotion .

Pretty sure that he cannot accept the $1M.

Knowing the rules 1st hand, I'm only about 110% sure he can't particularly if the money is coming from foreign funding.

What I had to go through to accept a plaque once was completely insane.

‘Starting from scratch’: Harris contradicts Fauci on White House COVID vaccine plan
https://nypost.com/2021/02/15/starting- ... cine-plan/

Vice President Kamala Harris is claiming in a new interview that the Biden administration is “starting from scratch” to develop a national vaccine distribution plan because former President Donald Trump left them with nothing, contradicting comments from Dr. Anthony Fauci, who disputed that contention last month.

Fauci, chief medical adviser to President Biden, was asked during a White House briefing on Jan. 21 whether the coronavirus team was beginning from scratch with vaccine distribution or whether it is building on what the Trump administration began.

”We certainly are not starting from scratch because there is activity going on in the distribution,” Fauci said.
