Yes. But that different place was not all that long ago......
In the SF books that you have read on this subject what was their description of what the population of the planet be like without the use of oil, gas and coal.
While I read and own a lot of books I have never been a reader of fiction. While I watch a lot of fictional movies I am not interested in the book. That is just me.....

Ranged from a very sophisticated steam driven mechanized society to something not far removed from late Ren to 17th century to that merged with a 19th century existence; heavily agrarian yet also a very real mechanical manufacturing component.

Sadly, the transference to the screen tends to butcher most books and movie industry is resplendent in examples of such butchery....and so you've missed out on far better stories than the ones you only watched.

Sadly, sadly true.
First Sci-Fi book I ever read was heinline's "Puppet Masters." The film was a crushing disappointment, especially since it didn't show nekkid women who were thataway to show they weren't being controlled

So you are saying the big reason you were disappointed was because the movie did not have any T&A in it.
How about the book, pictures or illustrations.

Can I conclude from what you said that the use of fossil fuel had a big part in the expansion of the population of the planet.
The use of oil to produce kerosene probably saved the whales from extinction.

Expansion per unit time, yes. Could it have expanded similarly over a greater amount of time, sure.

So far....

Plus, back in the day, one used one's imagination...
And...it was a crappy retelling of the book.

And that just about sums up much of the movie making efforts over the past 100 years or so.

Remember the movie version of "Dune?" The visuals were pretty good, but the story sucked.

The 1st movie? Terrible translation of what remains a true classic book. Terrible casting as well. Terrible interpretation. Terrible music, except for 1 scene. I think they went through 4 directors and the last one refused to put his name on it opting for it to be released as directed by Alan Smithee.
A prime example of how not to translate a book to film.
The 2nd version by the SF channel was far closer to congruent with the book, yet also deviated at times, and badly then.
I have read that a 3rd version has been considered.

You gentlemen can switch tracks faster than I can keep up with it. Humans to aliens in a single jump...

We need those people that create illegal drugs to come up with ( melange ) that way we can all travel in space.

Now this has been an interesting topic. All over the place. Van Danigan (sp). Sci Fi.
How come nobody mentioned Charles Fort? He didn't seem to comment on the weird, just pointed it out.
Too bad he died before man went to the Moon. If man did. Was that all faked?
After all we are talking about HUMANS.
