Most people on earth believe and see what ever they are told.

...or want to believe.

But why would "they" have wanted to work at "carving" such spheres in the first place - what possible good could the spheres have provided for their culture? For example, obviously, they provided no useful purpose for the further or original domestication of animals or cultivation of crops (?)

Vanity. Telling you neighbor with balls, "Look, I am so rich I can buy more balls from the ball artists than you." Seriously Murph, vanity.
