Re: Oh Happy Day!
I hope Rufus is having a very enjoyable and rewarding weekend.
Re: Oh Happy Day!
Been back in OK last week and missed this thread (lots more too), but just wanted to toss in several great "steak"burgers here in the KCMO area. Winsteads is/was a tradition in KCMO area since the 40's and dominated that style of burger (cooked on one side only and mushed pretty thin with crispy edges. Comes with slice of onion (much thicker than burger, but has no strong onion smell or taste stomach, just sweet like a Vadalia, dill pickle slice and mustard.........you can order it other ways but that's the traditional way.
Several years ago (in OKC and KCMO) a new chain opened, "Freddy's Frozen Custard, out of Wichita. They copied the Winsteads steakburger and are expanding around the Midwest. They don't have the onion slice, which is Winsteads calling card, but they serve it with pickle slice and mustard just like Winsteads as standard fair. Sadly, they're knocking off Winsteads, which is down to 3 stores in the KCMO area from a high of maybe 10. Winsteads burgers seem to be changing in quality at the location we tried, but we're going down to the Plaza (original location) in a few weeks as we're told it's as good as it once was. Car hops have been long gone, replaced by drive thru, but indoor seating still available and being just off the Plaza I expect it should be around for awhile.
I have to agree, 5 guys didn't impress me when I tried it.......very sloppy and expensive, but Culver's is a pretty good burger.
