To be honest, our generation is one of the last who could live some semblance of the American Dream, in which hard work paid off and you could save for the future if you were diligent. It got a little harder for my brother who is 8 years younger and I have sister and brother in laws woe are in there early 50's, who've saved nothing. In fact they seem to live on CC's. Don't know how it will all end.

And where you might see your children have a brighter future than what you experienced...............

Yes, due to the investment of our (WIFE AND I) complete retirement, we started a business 12 years ago in the field I'd been in for 31 years prior. It has been very successful for us and I wish I was younger, because there is so much more that could be done to grow the business, but I'm too tired for fresh or more business and I'm just waiting to get out. Son came on board from the beginning and daughter decided once we were proven successful to do the same. The daughter sold us back our gifted stock and basically retired 3 years ago. Son, has never been half as interested or passionate about this business as he is about cars, guns and physical fitness. So, there is really no one to take over except to maybe limp it along.

So, yes, both our children should have a brighter future because of mom and dad's hard work.

Key word, "should". You might be better off just selling it off.

Difficult decision. We actually sold to him at a great price a year ago, but he still owes us the lion's share of the money and we still hold the company together. I thought that might change his level of interest, but it didn't. I will not leave until we either sell to someone else or I have all my money. I've worked too hard to not be able to live and enjoy when we retire.

We tried to do as Buffet said. "Leave your children enough so they can do anything, but not enough so they can do nothing". Sage advice. But, it seems the daughters idea of enough is a lot less than we thought. Both kids are smarter and brighter than us in book knowledge, but our old school learning and worldly knowledge is hard to beat.
