Hey Trampy,

The usual stuff for Thanksgiving. Brined the turkey as usual.

Christmas is our occasion for local food. Chistmas tamales will be on the menu this year. Sweet spiced carne with dried cranberry in masa and wrapped in corn husk.

"8 big crabs, dozen fresh organic artichokes, 4 mini loaves of fresh sourdough, salad stuff, white wine and beer in the cooler. Getting some pies going. Setting up a picnic table outside because its supposed to be another 75 degree day."

Some eat to live. These guys live to eat.

Now about that bird...

So the butcher (I use this word carelessly since he looks like road kill and mutters like a dying Hugo) brings my bird to the cashier. It's the size of bloated ostrich, which is going to cost me as much as a bad used car, BUT I have my special discount pledge. However, when SHE (beyond my abilities of description) rings this turkey up, it's at FULL price (think pretty good used car here).

"Wait a minute," I say. "I ordered a small bird. And what about my discount?"

"Is it gonna be okay," she says. (No question mark here.)

"No," I say.

Nothing happens for thirty seconds, as the flotilla of hippies waiting in line start fidgeting, needing another toke. [I'm thirsty]

What the hell was I thinking? Am I drunk? I thought you were getting a cockatoo or parrot from a pet store run by 70s people and pondering the variation in largeness in such creatures.

Wow. This is the first time a Thanksgiving dinner on my wifes side of the family did'nt end in a drunken brawl. It was actually pleasant for a change. I remember two Thanksgivings ago I wound up with a fractured wrist and two broke fingers trying to break up a dispute in the carport. Yep, it was nice. Cheers.

"Is it going to be okay," she says again.

"No," I say again.

[I'm not sure this story works without me doing the voices. Hers . . . you might be able to guess it.]

Tramp appears to have been very shaken by the whole ordeal.
Perhaps we should give him a minute to compose himself...

So I waited again, her dull eyes staring at me. And--

She said it again. "Is it going to be all right?"

So I bought the damn thing. What else was I going to do?

Delicious turkey.

Hmmm, yes Jon, maybe that will happen some day? Meanwhile I'm going to curl up with Tramp where he's lying in front of the wood stove. Ah. Mmm hmm.

Hey. Only about one more month till the trains go up. :D

Happy Thanksgiving to all hobos.

Tramp, you did the right thing with the turkey clerk. She was a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

There is no nap more sublime than that taken on the floor in front of hot cast iron.

Tramp!!!!!! You're suggestion was spot-on, Brother!!! I did the road in a medium gray, then dry brushed it a lighter shade. Tomorrow I'll fill in the crevices with a darker wash. Here is how it looks so far.
PS No curbs yet as I don't know what buildings are going were. I'm hoping Dennis is closing in on the first one for me. :D
