First freeze warning goes up for north-central Maryland for Saturday night, Oct. 17th...maybe that will finally kill off the cloud of mosquitos hanging out in my back yard.

They are calling for the same north of Philly. It was an odd growing this year. I still have bright green tomato vines with bright green tomatoes. All i got this year was 2 red beefsteaks. Even my angle trumpet flower never bloomed. I guess it's a year of pickled green tomatoes.

My grandfather used to pick all of the green tomatoes at the end of the season, wrap each one individually in newspaper and put them on a table in his basement. Then over the winter whenever he wanted a tomato, he'd bring one up from the basement, unwrap it and put it in a sunny window for a day or so...they'd ripen up in about thirty-six hours.

Yes, I guess that I'll have to bring all of the cacti inside - not too much effort like it was 10 years ago when I had 40-50 of them. Still, the 2 "sentinels" by the front door are a bit of bugger to move - over 8' tall, heavy & awkward, and if you're not wearing good heavy gloves, you'll feel their wrath for days afterwards.

We did not even get frost on the pumpkin yet and home depot thinks it's time for this. Oct. 15

I have a prickly pear to dig up. I think that blasted thing spits needles at me when i walk by. most of this stuff will be 60% off by black friday and completely out of the store by Dec.20

Oy, why do you do that to yourself? I had a few small cacti growing in a raised bed for a few years that could survive year-round. All I had to do was walk past that stuff and I was picking hair-like spines out of my hands. Finally dug them out and threw them away...after I picked all of those spines out of my hands I never looked back.

Well, the larger one is a plant that I grew from a single leaf opuntia braziliensis (an example: http://www.raecker.com/2012/opuntia/b-brasiliensis.jpg) cutting starting back in 1982. It's now appears to be like a small tree with woody stalks in an 18" pot. The spines on it are not hair-like, but rather like 2p nails. The smaller one is from a cutting off the larger that I've had ~15 years.

I have maybe 20 other varieties out on the deck that will come in very soon some of which I have had even longer now.

If that is the yellow flowering opuntia compressa that is commonly used for ground cover, it is actually rather freeze hardy. I had those in PA and in DE outdoors w/o any issues - they look like crap during the winter and then suddenly are spreading like crazy after a few warm days. I have an ~4x6' area on the East side of the house full of them mixed with clusters of irises.....now for about 30 years.

I think this gets pink or light purple flowers. I left half of it outside this year. If it comes back in the spring i'll never dig it up again. It is a little close to the road. Salt and snow mounds may do it in. I got my arse kicked by the glochids. they must have ben on my shoe laces paint legs or shirt. This was the first year my angel trumpet did not flower. Roses did great this year.

The much ballyhooed first frost finally hit this morning with a nice white glaze over the lawn...thirty-three degrees on the porch thermometer at 0600. That should finish off the last of the mosquito cloud that's been hanging out in the backyard.

I heard that it was 30 degrees out at Dulles this morning, but it was in the 40's on the beltway when that came across the radio. Not a long distance away, but the weather in northern VA changes quite rapidly over some short distances as you go westward to slightly higher elevation and inland.
