OK, I'm sober again.
San,
Ol' buddy, you can't *choke* *gasp* really mean that? Trade in a redhead? A REDHEAD?!? That's crazy talk.
Can't be done. Won't be done. Plain and simple.
Jim,
We all live several lifetimes in our years on this good Earth. Sounds like you're ready to start another one. There's dignity to be had, too, in any job, be it hospital housekeeping or clerking at Wal-Mart, if you work to the best of your ability.
Gotta keep in mind, no matter how black things look, how bad things get, how much crap comes descending on your head, remember, it goes the other way too. And it will for you.
Too bad the redhead doesn't pay in cash. Here it is, a hot sticky mid-July day, and she's got me out in this searing sunlight, cutting stringers for a deck she's got me re-building. She wants wrap-around steps, too. Man, here's where I could use a good engineer. If you want to cruise on up from Limerick (what, 2 1/2 hours?) and give me a hand, you'll like how the redhead DOES pay....all the food and beer you can carry away, and a little pucker of lipstick on your cheek of choice.
In the meantime, as I swing my hammer and saw, seems to help the cadence to have a little tune in mind. Seems appropriate for you too, Jim, in the quandary you're in. You can help me on the chorus:
"Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,

PS: Praise the Lord, Tramp ain't the bull-goose post-er anymore.

I can hear Janice's voice on that as clear today as it was many a year ago. There was a commerical about 10 years ago that she sung that on the commerical. My mother in law didn't know who was singing it or her life style but she said now thats cute. The only thing I feel right now is a "Ball and Chaine".

Dang it!!
I went and missed Stiff's birthday, all of 8 days ago.
Happy belated, friend. Way I figure, your cake was so big, (*cough*, all those candles, or such), you're still washing some pieces down with some Gold(tm) or Silver(tm).
Here's a hobo toast to one of the real good guys. Many happy returns of the day!

Where in Pa. is Orangeville? Is it up in the Pocono's? I love going on trips up in the Pocono's. I also love going out West on Rte, 6. Like the good Govenor(sp) talks about on his commericals. My wife and I discovered RTE. 6 on our honeymoon way back in 67. We have since been back on that route twice going all the way back to Bedford, even saw the Zippo factory. I want to take a trip on Route 6 again but I am kind of busy right now (if you know what I mean) We stayed in Wellsboro at the Caynon Motel the last two times we we back that way. Love the Alleghney Resivor(sp, I took a picture in 67 overlooking the resavor and I found the exact spot that I took the picture the 2nd time we were there. Maybe I will win the trip that the State is haveing out that way.
Jim
P.S. Thanks again.

San,
Knew what you meant. You might have missed my posts when I first bought that tractor, 'cause I was calling it my '2nd redhead' back then. I bought 'er because it was pretty, a classic, not because I expected it had much '***'.
Or is this a "Chevy/Ford" thing? I'm sure that happens with tractor owners, too, no?
Jim,
Thanks for the reply. Reassuring. Yeah, we're just a hoot and a hollar up the road.
Rt. 6 is a beautiful road, one of Pa.'s gems. I'm sure you're aware it was one of the first transcontinental highways, and starts in Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod, and ends in California. I found it once when out on a 'walkabout' on my motorcycle. Pulled over to a scenic overlook outside Towanda, to discover the absolutely gorgeous pastoral farmland tucked within a horseshoe bend of the Susquehanna below me, was originally being prepared for the arrival of Marie Antoinette had she escaped the French Revolution. Marie in Pennsylvania!! (Turns out instead, she stayed to share some cake). Only a few miles further along, I passed through a town called Camptown, turned out to be the very village where started "The Camptown Races", (doo dah, doo dah), which was a horse race between Camptown and Wyalusing. Didn't see any bobtail nags, though.
Fascinating, where one's wanderings can find one. Ah, the hobo life!

Yes I love the ride on RTE.6. Coming back on the route once we came to a lookout around Lock Haven. I think that was the airport when they made the Piper aircrafts. On a trip West one time I stopped and asked for directions to a motel around Coundersport(sp) The guy told me you go straight into tome and when you come to the red light you turn right and its about a mile down the road. Thinking it was a big place I was watching for the first light. Well my wife and I laughted because he was right, you turn right at the red light (only one in town which RTE 6 turned right anyway), and I think there wasn't much in town anyway. We stayed at this motel and about 3 o'clock in the morning we lost power in the hotel and no one came to check on us or anything. Didn't get a discount on the bill and couldn't eat there cause they still didn't have power in the am. It was hot too (no a/c. I don't think we are ever going to stay in that town again. We past a lumber Jack musium but didn't stop..Ah rural Pa. You gotta love it. Also you can't be in a hurry on RTE. 6. Most places only 2 lanes. Its beautiful, but laid back.

Afternoon, Gents.
If you don't mind, i'd like to sit an' join you fer a while. I have been up and down old RT 6 since I was a rugrat peering out of the back windows of the Pontiac Catalina. Lately I've taken to rambling down much faster lanes, like that big, fancy interstate...but if I squint me eyes a little, I can still see myself feeding the deer at the deer park on Rt 6, sleeping in a tiny room in the Towanda Motel, or taking a side trip up to "The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon". Childhood memories, for me, are alwys a little pastel colored, and it was always pretty sunny. Still remember the bowls of soup from a disgustingly dirty diner on Rt 6. The years have cleaned the place up, and made the soup like manna from heaven (at least in my mind)
Right now I could just use a little rest, and a good story, while a take a little cat nap

Tramp:
Not sure about if that was good ole Rte. 6 or not.
Little John:
I have found more people that know about the beauty and little towns on there. I just love going up that way. As I had stated that my wife and I took route 6 on our honeymoon in 67 and we hadn't been on it until about 7 years ago or so and have been on it again since that. It was probably about 6 years ago. We love the grand canyon. I have some pictures in 67 and a train going along the floor of the canyon. I found out about 7 years ago that the train tracks are gone now. Seven years ago we went up the western side of the canyon and on the way down we saw a black bear running acooss the road in front of us. Didn't try to look for it to take a picture. Last time we were there we went up again on the same road but they were repaveing it and it was noisy so no bears. I haven't got to ride the train over there in Wellsboro yet cause it only operates on the week-end. Gee I wish we were going back next week. Also the Canyon Motel covered their pool about 5 years ago and it was still open the last time we were there. Also like the Kinzuas(sp) Dam. It had just opened up in 65 and we were there in 67. I like how they have the man made lake up top of the mountain and run the water down during the day to generate electric and then pump the water back up at night to let it go down the next day. Also to fish there you have to have 3 fishing liences(sp) Pennsylvania, New York and The Iraquoy(sp) indian nation.

Now, if a fellur was to drive from Maine to Route 6 through Penn. would he still find all this cool stuff from another era (diners, old motels, ancient tourist attractions), or would it all be gone? I drove north through Penn on Route 15, which crosses 6 and the motels on that road where so filthy and expensive we had the drive all the way to New York State to get a room in Elmira (Hampton Inn). Wasn't one motel run by anyone that spoke much English.

I couldn't guarentee ya anything but we have always found it pretty good. When we go up thataway we go on Route 30 to around Gettysburg and then route 15 up to 6 and then head West. It is back woodsy most of the way and I think that is the charm for me. I go to relax and you just go the speed limit or what the traffic bears and forget about everything. Yes most of the little towns are still there and most of the musiun's and things are still there. At least they were 5 or 6 years ago. If I have to get somewhere in a hurry, yes I will take the interstates and Turnpike, but if I had the time I love going on the ole routes like route 6. We stated at a budget ? Inn in Gettsburg on our way up to route 6 once and I think it was run by turbans. During the night I awoke and went to the bathroom and the reflection from a light was comeing in through a window and reflected off the mirror and I told my wife that Habieb was trying to get an x-rated film of us. We really laughted about that one. Then we rode up into N.Y. and on the way back we pasted an adult shop along the rode and I told her that was where Habieb was selling out tape...Oh yes it was a fun trip.. I don't know if anyone else is enjoying this but I sure as hell am. Its makeing me laugh...something I need.
