It seems strange that three of us could have the same thought.

The answer: "Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar."

For whatever reason that illustration sticks in memories.

I was going to guess the dead body of the unfortunate soul that mistook the species and ate a poisonous one.
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

In reply to Webenda and Rufus, perhaps, the reason is that when we first saw that vignette, as boys, we had never, ever seen anything like it previously . It was totally new and fun, affording us a tantalizing hint of things to come.

Yes, indeed. And with movies of the '50's like:
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Body Snatchers
Forbidden Planet

and even
The Wizard of OZ
we were introduced to ideas and places that we had no thought of previously, but once they were placed in the imagination, never left.

Yes, a Leafy Seadragon. Seems like someone did that seahorse before. If not then it was in a National Geographic Sargasso Sea article.

The Leafy Seadragon reminds me of the time we were sent into the woods with the task of camouflaging ourselves with whatever materials where at hand.

The training sergeant found all but one of us. When the missing one was called back to the group, the training sergeant complemented him on a job well done. Then, looking over the most excellent camouflage job, "There is only one thing... you have covered yourself in poison ivy."

That evening he was covered with blisters.
