I'm back on the briny deep. Take a look at www.rrstation.com They have some of the best prices on G scale of anywhere I've found.
First, I'd reccomend LGB. They are somewhat higher in price than most of the other brands, but they are the most reliable. Bachmann's Spectrum line of G scale is pretty good, too.
I'd reccomend getting an LGB starter set to begin with. You can find them from about $125 and up. They come with a transformer and a circle of R1 track. R1 is 24" radius. All of LGB's locos are garrantted to run on R1. The larger locos like the 2-8-2 Mike will run on it but they don't really like it.
The starter sets are mostly 0-4-0's or small locos. They usually come with two cars.
I just bought the little LGB saddle tank Porter starter set. It's cute as a bug, and runs great.
The LGB track and switches aren't cheap, but then you get what you pay for!

G scale'n in the yard is a hoot! The rug rats "really" seem to like it.
My setup is just laying in the grass infront of my RV. I have people all the time stopping to watch the trains, and the guys that work in the yard bring their kids over to watch the trains all the time. My boss even stops work occasionally to come play with the trains when he see's me out Choo-choo'en. He come's over about every day to find out if I have any new toys. lol Just before I came back aboard, he had his wife and kids over to play trains, and the wife was telling him that he was going to have to set some track up in their yard. lol
