Hobo Jungle
Jon,
The rabbit in rarebit is as rare as toad hair.
My grandmother was Welsh. Here is her Recipe.
WELSH RAREBIT
4 ozs. grated cheese
1 oz. butter
Slice of toast
3 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon Labatt 50 ale
Pepper and salt (mustard if desired)
Place cheese and milk in saucepan and melt slowly.
Add pepper, beer, salt and butter.
When piping hot pour it over the toast and brown under the grill.
Grandma never measured anything. My mother added the quantities.
Grandma's toaster used to fascinate me. It did not pop up like ours.
It had a door on both sides and she had to turn the bread to toast both sides.
It made the best toast. I loved Grandma's Welsh Rarebit.

D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking at it from my side of the fence, I'll take the fish cakes!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy the fire.
Could there be a sweeter night than this, sitting infront of the woodstove while a longish-haired poet darts out in his Impala for pistachio ice-cream just for me before the market closes? Maybe he'll even come back thong-free, do you suppose? Kind of leaves fish cakes in the dust.

I see my poltergeist has been at the keys again. Jon, you would have lost your bet. My mom lived a few miles from the B&J factory and I learned too much about those two to ever purchase their products. They've sold out now, but I still can't support them.
Wayne, about that toaster. If you did it right, did it automatically turn the bread? Was it two sided and pressed steel? Thanks for the rarebit notes. Some cookbooks actually have it rabbit.

Tramp,
You got it. It was two sided and pressed steel. You must have seen one. She opened the doors on each side and turned the bread by hand. There was nothing automatic about it. I do not remember there being a timer either. She just knew when the bread was toasted perfectly.

Wayne, here's the odd thing. If your Grandma had wanted to, she could have turned the bread without touching it. The toaster is designed to flip over the bread by lowering the door horizontal in one smooth motion and the righting it to vertical again, if you get what I mean. It took me a long time to discover that. I was amazed when I did.
Is that a Resistol?
Is that a Resistol?
A toaster works by applying radiant heat directly to a bread slice. When the bread's surface temperature reaches about 310 degrees Farenheit, a chemical change known as the Maillard reaction begins. Sugars and starches start to caramelize -- turn brown -- and to take on intense flavors.
That's toast.
With more heating, the sugars and underlying grain fibers start turning into carbon.
That's burnt toast.

BREAD
For bread the merchant labors long and late;
For bread the beggar goes from gate to gate.
For bread the sailor loses hearth and home,
A thousand, thousand miles bread-seekers roam.
For bread the wild birds fall in nets and gins;
For bread do men commit a hundred sins.
For bread the soldier dies in seige and fight;
For bread the minstrel carols day and night.
For bread men study all that man may know.
The house that wanteth bread if filled with woe;
For bread unites the family as one,
Its lack divides the father from the son.
For bread are weddings made and sermons said;
Of all good things, the first and best is bread.

Hey Jon, and everybody else,
Thanks for the invite. I'm back in Jax so I missed all beut a little rain.
I just added a new loco to my railroad. It's an LGB 2-8-2 Mikado. The damn thing is huge!! The loco by itself is 2' long. The sound is awesome!
I don't have enough cars to even slow it down. 20 cars so far. Doesn't even phase it.

Turk, Glad to hear you're doing ok! But it sure would have been fun to have you show up with that green switcher and a circle of track so's we could go round in circles with a bunch of beer and sausage 'till we fell off of it.
That LGB is a beauty!!! Doe's it come with sound or do you have to add it?

It's got sound all over the place. It whistles, it bells, it choos', it chuffs, it squeals, it whooshes. It makes sounds that I still haven't figured out what they are! lol
The fire box flickers and glows, and although it looks a little strange doing it, it will pull a 2' radius curve. Cost a bloody fortune, but it's LGB and they ain't cheap to begin with. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a woman, and I can turn the sound off if I get tired of it!!
