Reversing Climate Change

Climate change: Can sending fewer emails really save the planet?
https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-55002423
Are you the type of person who always says thank-you? Well, if it's by email, you should stop, according to UK officials looking at ways to save the environment.
The Financial Times reports that we may all soon be encouraged to send one fewer email a day, cutting out "useless" one-line messages - such as "thanks".
Doing so "would save a lot of carbon", one official involved in next year's COP26 climate summit in Glasgow said.

Not breathing or living would also help.

Pretty silly when put into perspective vs. everything else.
Most of the trouble in the world is caused by people wanting to be important.
Re: Reversing Climate Change
“All the clean technologies that we need to combat climate change – whether that’s wind turbines, solar panels or batteries, they’re all really, really mineral intensive, We need to make sure we extract these materials as responsibly as possible otherwise it mitigates the reason for building these technologies in the first place.”
The new 'gold rush' for green lithium
https://www.bbc.com/future/article/2020 ... een-energy
Lithium is crucial for the transition to renewables, but mining it has been environmentally costly. Now a more sustainable source of lithium has been found deep beneath our feet.
Lithium is currently sourced mainly from hard rock mines, such as those in Australia, or underground brine reservoirs below the surface of dried lake beds, mostly in Chile and Argentina. Hard rock mining – where the mineral is extracted from open pit mines and then roasted using fossil fuels – leaves scars in the landscape, requires a large amount of water and releases 15 tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of lithium, according to an analysis of the whole lithium production process by raw materials experts Minviro. The other conventional option, extracting lithium from underground reservoirs, relies on even more water to extract the lithium – and it takes place in typically very water-scarce parts of the world, leading to indigenous communities questioning their sustainability.

Lithium is tough; rare earths are tougher and in everything.

Maybe we need to be less global.

Let me know what usages of rare earths and lithium batteries you can live without.

Looks like we are trading one environmental disaster for another one.

Not really. It's been ongoing for a long time; not seeing it or knowing about it is something else and probably more related to deliberate blindness to the cost of actions; humans are very good at doing what are really self-destructive act quite routinely.
Perpetual motion.
I don't think that's an accurate use of the term given that it's not really possible. Lurching forward from one self-inflicted mess to another while creating the next one all while tossing hands into the air exclaiming "Oh, my!" is a more likely scenario.

Re: Reversing Climate Change
The real problem is we haven't engineered a viable economic system that works without exponential growth. If we could go back to one billion humans, yet maintain today's living standards, lithium batteries and all, we would be better off.
Well, the six and a half billion humans we would somehow lose wouldn't think so. But I may volunteer in the next two decades, after burning an obscene amount of aviation fuel, some of it with lead in it.

We could cut down on shipping Maine Lobsters to the west coast. The west coast could stop shipping dungeness crabs to the east coast. A lot of things get shipped for no other reason then convenience r i want it. If another model train never arrived on our shores. Would the hobby dry up? If we never drank another imported beer. Would people go without? You wont believe the amount of used bicycles in the trash around here. I take them fix a tire or two sell or give them away. Do we really need imported ham and cheese? BMW Porsche ? The Nfl want to say We're climate friendly. Then why play at dark? Why have all the field lights on during the day? Not many people want to give something up to help. I try to ride my bicycle to work about 60 times a year. Could i do more? sure.
When i look around me. I see people that need big 4x4 suvs. Do the need it? No. Maybe we get 2 days of snow covered roads. My VW Rabbit did as well as my Jeep Cherokee.
Sure there's some things that need to be shipped all over the world. Essential things for day to day life. Hopefully a few people realized. Just what they can do without. It's been 9 months now.

You may be giving that up sooner than you think along with your classic Mustang as the young ones in congress push to to the far left with the Green New Deal.
Re: Reversing Climate Change
Yes, and if we do as Robert mentioned we will become isolationists and that seems to be a no-no.

You might also notice that not a one of that far left end is getting appointed anywhere,
You might also notice that we'll probably have a split Congress so pretty close to nothing will get done again for the next 2 years
