The world's first flying car is set to go on the market with pre-sales scheduled to begin next month.

The first of the two-seat hybrid-electric vehicles, which can switch between driving and flying modes in less than a minute, will be delivered to customers next year.

According to manufacturer Terrafugia, which belongs to the parent company of Volvo, the Transition can fly up to 400 miles (640km) at top speeds of 100mph (160kmh).

The price has not yet been determined but preliminary sales for the first of the pioneering models will begin in October, according to China's news agency Xinhua.

DHS is busy trying to ban all model airplanes. The Terrafugia flying car probably won't be treated any differently than a small Piper or Cessna.

The problem with flying cars is that they don't perform adequately as either airplanes or cars. The most "successful" have been the Taylor Aerocar and the Fulton Airphibian. The Aerocar towed its wings and aft fuselage and tail behind it as a trailer. The Airphibian left its wings and tail behind at the airport.

I would imagine operators of some kind of car-plane would have to register (if that's what the papers are called) a flight plan for any intended flights on any particular day. I mean, we just couldn't have drivers taking a notion amidst traffic along major highways, like those feeding NYC , or the entire East coast of the USA, for example, and zipping up into the airspace above them. Can you imagine! Multiply that by, ostensibly, hundreds or even thousands of vehicles suddenly deciding to go aloft, and there would be armadas of the new car-planes falling from the skies. Trips from roadways up into the air would more likely be better suited to be done in wide-open spaces, like out in the Southwest, as in Arizona, or Northwest, like in Montana, no?

Our roads are dangerous enough. We don't need A.holes flying. I saw some of the most aggressive driving this week. While driving rt 81 north from south west Va. Into Pa.This was once a nice relaxing drive for me.Not now. Nobody gave a damn about any other drivers. Hooray for me and f@#k you.

I've noticed that same change along Rt81 in Pennsylvania too, over the past several decades. I used to drive often from the PA Turnpike straight up into NY, to Syracuse, along Rt81. However, Rufus once suggested I take a parallel roadway, Rt.11, which is more rural and narrow-laned, and I found that to take longer but to be far more tolerable, even enjoyable and casual.

I traveled a part of rt 11 this trip. I enjoy it. You can get a feel for America that has past us by. Rt 81 has become a bypass of I 95. A trucker traveling North can save $400 in tolls. Plus hotel rooms are $50.00 a room cheaper. If your traveling for pleasure hotel saving is a big bonus. Things are expensive along the 95 corridor. RT 81 the secret is out and has been for awhile.
