The web was the game-changer. It was difficult to imagine/perceive all the ways that would throw over the ox-cart.

Now I'm looking forward to getting my Amazon packages from driverless delivery vans, all ordered by Alexa, my personal assistant and deducted seamlessly from my bank-account.

It's AI and those killer robots I'm just now starting to worry about.

$2,980 a sq.ft. on 5th ave. Why pay that price ? Most shoppers now buy things online while they work. Why go into the city to shop? Sales tax is higher. Tolls are crazy high. Parking is high. If a family from New Jersey were to visit FAO. It would be $75.+ before they bought anything.

You're totally right about those costs, Yet, some people enjoy the glamor of it all and being in such an interesting city and store.

I will be in NYC next week for a function and will let you know if I find it enjoyable. It's going to cost me close to $1500 for this trip. I can write that off against one of my businesses, but it's still a stiff amount at the starting line.

Last time I was there I was totally lost and had no bearings whatsoever, but I had a guide and followed blindly. Most insane aspect was getting to & from the train station, and then getting on the train - something along the lines of a stampede.....once on the train I was able to relax.

If you elect to use the subway at some point in those travels, you will not be relaxing . And stay away from the edge of the platform. Many seasoned people use the buses to move around the city, especially when going north - south; south - north.

Personally , I have always found it safe and very convenient to take taxis. Have plenty of smaller bills in you pocket for easy exit from them.

Walking can be gratifying and satisfying exercise. However, I would not have any cellphone in view when walking around. And remember, when walking, city blocks are shorter between blocks along the avenues than the walk is between avenues. So, saying you are going to go from 6th Ave to 7th Ave is going to indicate more exercise than walking from 49th St. to 50th St., for example .

If you enjoy art museums, MoMA and the Guggenheim and the Whitney are doable in a couple hours, but the Metropolitan cannot be done in a day - not even a whole day. Pick your subject and expect to burnout well before finishing that wing . I used to make individual pilgrimages into the Met to see specific paintings, or the Egyptian wing, but not all of it.

Snack. Drink. Often. Surrender to it all.

It's the lurkers around them, in NYC, ever at the ready, that are the reason for a judicious paying and exiting of taxis. I'll let your non-bumpkin-ness finish that thought.
