The Song of the Spike
by Joseph S. DeRamus

A rusty railroad spike am I
Who holds the rail against the tie.
With sledges I am driven deep
So that the rail won't spread or creep,
And there I stay from sun to sun
Clamping the rail so the trains may run.

In stormy weather hot or cold
You'll find me there with a death-like hold;
And through the stillness of the night
I lie and grip with all my might
And folks who ride in luxury
Will never know the strain on me.

They put me there to do my task;
I don't complain or questions ask.
I only know I must not fail
To hold the tie against the rail.
I'm just a rusty spike, 'tis true,
But I've a man-size job to do.

I've been searching through several of the
More active threads for replies by Roger. I have not found anything since this Dec 2019 one on
this thread, though I only looked a couple replies deep on the other threads.

My concern is the serious weather in his area, for a couple days, now, as well as his health.

Anybody?

Hey Murph,
I'm still around and post fairly often whenever something strikes my interest. Actually many times since December.
I get upset and confused by some of the political stuff and try to avoid commenting.

We have had a little heavy weather in our area but nothing really bad in our immediate area.
Up to 3" of rain is predictes for tonight and tomorrow.

No covid problems in my family and rather close relatives that are strung out in Georgia, Texas,
Colorado, Kentucky, Ohio, Arizona, New York, North Carolina, Maryland and Florida.

I hope that you and all of my MTJ friends that I have met or only know on the internet are well and stay well.
Even those who may not consider me a friend.

Over the weekend while the forum was down I spent some time on the net looking for train related information and ran across this article by Tramp (Eric Green) and his good friend Dennis Brennan going to a model railroad competition.

Tramp does have an interesting way with words. I have his book "LIVECELL" Thought others might enjoy the article and the pictures of the models. :)

Haven't heard from Tramp for a long while. Hope he and the missus are well and living the hi-life Down East.

From the article:
" To have won nothing, NOTHING, really hurts. After all, I know my models are very good." The first part, been there, done that; the second not so much ; however, against some of the competition, maybe so.
I have been to quite a few shows but never ran into anyone (the show hosts, anyway) like "Bob " and "Greg"; I think that those two would have turned me off from attending any more narrow gauge conventions. $115.00 just to get in the door?????
Edit: It was a great read, thank you for linking it.
