The first time I saw 'Signs" I had rented it and watched it with my youngest grandson. He would cover his eyes at some of it,
Had to remind him it is just a movie and it is all fake, not real. My grandson is Bi-Polar.

The worst one for him was "Sleepy Hollow" with Johnny Depp. That one had him up several times in the middle of the night with the headless houseman chasing him around his bedroom.

For me it was the movie "Invaders from Mars" (1953) saw it at the movies on a Sat afternoon. That one gave me nightmares. Also had me checking the back of my parents necks.

Why did you show him these when you know he has problems?

The diagnosis for Bi=Polar came later. Up until that time he was just listed as hyperactive, the same as his mother was.

We always watched the movies together so we could explain them and also show how they make movies. They have far more problems going to a public school and the crap they pick up there from other students.

Harry Saltzman made brilliant movies. Putting aside all of those early Bond films, I think this might have been his best:

Must have seen it ten times in the theater...just a tremendous movie.

This has good value. I've seen too many parents unwittingly use movies and TV to instill their own fears, anxieties, and dysfunctionality into their children..........

Hush now baby, baby, dont you cry.
Mother's gonna make all your nightmares come true.
Mother's gonna put all her fears into you.
Mother's gonna keep you right here under her wing.
She wont let you fly, but she might let you sing.
Mama will keep baby cozy and warm.
Ooooh baby ooooh baby oooooh baby,
Of course mama'll help to build the wall.

The Ray Charles movie is really good. I can't stand the guy who played Ray, but I was able to overlook that. I forgot his name.

I am aware of plenty of people who have had enough of WWll movies and TV specials on the subject. For me, I continue to find them informative, allowing me to learn about a time when I was born (I am a War Baby).

However, on the subject of Vietnam, I am not sure. Has everything that needed to be told been told? I ask that because I have a lifelong friend who was there as a soldier, and he has been writing a book which he has me editing for him. I advise him on the grammar, composition ,and Elements of a Story, but keep a distance from making comment on what he has to say of substance about his experiences there.

I much appreciated "Platoon" and "Apocalypse, Now" very, very much. "Full Metal Jacket" and "The Deer Hunter" were favorites of mine, too. I'm not sure why I liked those movies so much, other than their giving various views I could not have imagined on my own into that hot sweaty pile of misery and sacrifice so clearly explained to the viewer. If there were anything else that needs to be explained, expressed and exposed about Vietnam, I'd be the last to know what that might be.

What do you say? Has enough been written and said about Nam ?

Murph,
Maybe enough has been written and said about Nam but we still find stuff to write and say about WW II, WW I, and the Civil oops, War of Northern Aggression. Some of it even shows a different perspective.

Here is an article that some might find interesting
http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/20/opinions/ ... index.html

A key to McMaster's thinking is his 1997 book, "Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Lies that Led to Vietnam." Published two decades ago when McMaster was only a major, "Dereliction of Duty" caused something of a sensation in the US military because it took US military leaders to task for their dereliction of duty during the Vietnam War.

I'm tempted to place a bet on how long McMaster survives in the Trump administration.

I followed him a bit in the Gulf War and he's probably the first pick Trumps made that I agree with. I hope he gets to speak his mind and that they will listen to him.

I wish him well.

I generally like all war movies, but if I see that D-Day footage of those 2 poor G.I.s dropping on the beach one more time l'm gonna scream!!!

I know the only reason they show it is because there's not a lot of film footage of the actual invasion....maybe they need to get all the re-enactors together and recreate the beach scene to give us some new footage to use

I just finished watching Hell On Wheels from start to finish (5 seasons), I thought it was well done and the cast was excellent, course it is post Civil War.

I like well done science fiction movies, space genre mainly. I may have mentioned it before but the original "The Thing" was great. The special effects are dated but you can't beat the intensity of the script. Shows you don't need spec effects if the script is good and the actors aren't hams.

The 1951 version or 1982, or 2011 version? Pretty good original story -- that's what really makes an SF movie - a story that provokes thought.

Actually, with SF I think that well done special effects add value and put the story into better context - The Thing wasn't shot in the Antarctic, and 2001 was a huge step forward, and then Bladerunner with all the backdrop behind another great story transformed to film....

I've been watching The Expanse on the SF channel -- there are 6 books in the series and the show now in its 2nd season has not finished the 1st book - the special effects are spot on and set the stage for every action and scene. One thing that is obvious from this series is that just about any of the SF books that we thought could never be put to film, can be done now.

Some of the comic relief in that harkened back to the classics -- that scene with the spider and Depp is hilarious.
