California has some hot springs, too. According to energy.ca.gov., "There are a total of 43 operating geothermal power plants in California with an installed capacity of 2,694 megawatts."

What would be the source of the heat? (Did I miss it?)

Geothermal generally has it origins in volcanic activity at some distance

That's what I was thinking. So that would make the location of the heat as that under the Pacific Plate, or the volcanic activity under Yellowstone, then, I'd imagine.

You did not miss it, and your question has been answered accurately, so, how hot is it down there?

If incoming sunlight and albedo were the only factors involved, the average temperature of the Earth would be -18° C (approximately 0° F.) Heat rising from the Earth's interior ( around 5,000 to 7,000 degrees Celsius) keeps us warm also. Earth is close to a steady state temperature due in part to the Earth’s core temperature of around 5,000 to 7,000 degrees Celsius. Thanks to a hot core the planet's average surface temperature in 2017 was 14.9° C (58.62° F (14.9° C).

From 1951 to 1980 the global mean surface air temperature was estimated to be 14° C (57° F.) It has seemed 0.9° C hotter recently, don't you think Murph?

I read recently that the fourth phase of the Rails-to-Trails project for the old Western Maryland right-of-way is well underway with an expected completion date of April 2019. This will extend the eastern end of the trail to Little Orleans and a bit beyond to the foot of the bridge at Doe Gully. Unfortunately there's no plans at this time to push across the bridge into what surely is the most scenically spectacular length of the old WM mainline, the ten or fifteen miles that passes through the Potomac Bends to reach Paw Paw, setting up the run west-northwest to Cumberland. This eastern section of the trail runs from Big Pool, past Fort Frederick, through Hancock, around Sideling Hill, soon to reach Little Orleans. Unfortunately I don't believe Indigo Tunnel will be opened as part of the reconstruction...last time I was to the tunnel it had been fenced off to protect the local bat population which is in steep decline.

The WMRY ran within a few feet of the C&O Canal for much of George Gould's Cumberland Extension. Between the river, the canal, and the railway, the scenery is pretty fabulous...well worth a visit if you ever get out that way. It's pretty desolate through sections, but this time of year there are lots of folks hiking/biking the C&O its entire length, some of whom also biked the WMRY trail that runs from Connellsville to Cumberland. Definitely need to slather yourself with bug-repellent, and the locals in Little Orleans warned us to be on the lookout for young bears and timber rattlesnakes...thanks Bill!

Here's a couple snaps of the swimming hole and C&O aqueduct at Fifteen Mile Creek, just a few hundred yards beyond Little Orleans. You can't see it here, but the WMRY ROW is just fifty yards or so further up the hillside:

Construction of this aqueduct began around 1837 or so, was completed in 1850. That's a long time. Apparently work stopped frequently because of brawls between the German and Irish workers (or so says the historical marker at the site). Labor strife was a frequent problem on the C&O...all those hot-head Irishmen, lol...

More pics to follow if there's any interest.

No doubt about it, there is some spectacular scenery in the Cumberland area. There is a You tube video of a run in WM F7 that shows a black bear crossing the track ahead of the engine. As best I recall it is done in multiple parts.

We have a pair of red foxes that have taken up residence below the house. We occasionally see them, but rarely. Sometimes they will sun themselves on the roof of the medical center behind us, catch a few zzzzzz's:

Scrawny devils, I suspect they draw upon the food the neighbors put out for feral cats in the area. I was hoping for a bit of squirrel population control...haven't seen evidence of that yet.

Nice picture!

I suspect that they might also prey on those feral cats.

Rufus,
What is that thing in your avatar?
No one else has asked so I guess everybody else knows.
