I ask because I haven't owned a cast engine for 5 years, and I've only owned two. Am I correct in assuming they run differently?

I hav'nt really noticed any difference in running between the two types, other then the fact the sprung drivers seem to absorb irregularities in the track much better.

Jon, are those slant-nose E-units MTH or Lionel? I got a soft soft for the refigerator cars as well - I've got about 9 of the Atlas ones, though they are all different. And, if I ever get this basement straightened up, I may actually be able to run them..!...

Jon, explain that staircase. Don't brass engines have a slower top speed? Doesn't this allow then smoother operation at low speeds? I remember my cast engines needing a lot of juice to get them moving. Maybe that's changed in the last few years?

Tramp, Staircase? You mean the green one in my last photo?
It goes over 2 sets of tracks so my sweet naked babes don't endanger themselves while hitting the taverns. :D
The diecast engines I own are pretty recent models with Oddessy Control (EOB), so the slow speed operation is really the same. When you say you used to own diecast, how long ago are you talking about? Did they have any speed control built in? That may be what you're refering to.

Jon, I had two of the early MTH Proto things, five year ago.

Where did you get that staircase (overpass)? Looks like nice detail.

Tramp and Jon,

Have a look at this post over in the main forum.

I don't believe that a low top end and smooth operating range of speed is a brass versus diecast issue, but that desirable qualities are determined by choice of motor(s) and gearing. It may very well be that the brass manufacturers (such as 3rd Rail) and Atlas make better choices.

San, I agree, I believe Lionels top end locomotives and 3rd Rail both use Pittman motors which are quite hardy to say the least!!!

Tramp, The pedestrian walkover was a kit I picked up for about 15.00, but the manufacturers name escapes me. It's similar to Lionels pictured here, but without the goofy base or price.

I think it is Plasticville, Jon. I try to pick up a couple of these every time I can get them. They can be kit bashed for staircases to elevated track, catwalk access, and any number of other applications. At approximately $15 each, the price is much cheaper than buying stair pieces from the Walter's catalog as Plastruct or Evergreen components and a lot less trouble than scratchbuilding.
