This was a big weekend for yard/tag sales around here...I occasionally stop if I see something from the road that looks interesting. I'm a sucker for old, well-used wood-working tools...this was a random item on a table full of mechanic's tools:



One wonders how things turn up in places least expected. Relatively recent production (last twenty years), manufactured in the spirit of the old hollow-cast Britains of 50-100 years ago.

Brings to mind one of my favorite poems:

I've been needing another try square...picked up this nice old nine-inch example, steel blade with a mahogany/brass head:



Cleaned up nice. No manufacturer's mark that I could find. Just like old toy trains, these old tools all have stories, but most of them are lost.

I have 4 of these; a set of 3 from a 4.5" Up to that 9" with brass trefoil holding what on mine are rose wood handles; the 4th one is made for 45 degrees. Got these from my great uncle's estate sale a number fo years ago, filthy and ugly. Cleaned up very nicely and I use that 4.5" one quite frequently in my shop when cutting sheets of scribed siding or clapboard.

I have an old Stanley frame square I keep precisely for that purpose...it's a KGS (known good square)...

Back when these were made you could actually trust your tools to be right,

I also have a couple of regular all metal framing squares and a few right angle blocks if I ever feel the need to check.

The square pictured above, and the ones' mentioned are machinist squares. New, they are not cheap and they're guaranteed to be dead on the money square.

I have two squares (both 18"x 24") that are very close to perfect square, (one an old steel square that my dad had when I was a kid), and one aluminum square, but I went through 5 of them to get it. I've bent 3 other squares in half and junked them. This last one that I bought is Aluminum, and I walked into Sears with a 2' x 3' piece of clean plywood and two sharp pencils and went to the square rack. Out of 5 that were hanging on the hook, I picked the 4th one, as it is less than 1/32" off in 24". One of those squares was 7/16" off square in 24"!! Pity the guy who gets that one without checking. Hope he ain't a cabinet maker. You'd think in today's age where a CNC machine can machine metal to 25/1,000,000 of an inch, they could build a square square. When I do anything with plywood, I use the square, the 3,4,5 rule, and I check my pencil lines from corner to corner with an accurate tape measure for square before using the saw.

I've got two squares I knocked out by dropping them, both times by rushing and being careless. Greater care has come with age (mine, not the squares).

If you spotted me 3 90% corners i would still not be able to make a square. I did it once in junior high. Our whole 9th grade class was required to square a board. This was part of our home ec class grade. Hard to believe i restore 18th and 19th century french furniture for a living.

Mitch! Now how many people actually measure how far off their squares are. People like you used to be called, "Squares."

Now you got me worring about my squares. Swanson 12" Speedlite Square: No error (that I could see.)
No Brand (Harbor Freight) metric square (100 gradian angle) off +3 mm in 600 mm. That relates to the 100 gradian angle being 100.159 gradians.

Thanks a lot Mitch. Now I have to try to straighten out the stretchers on that metric fence I built in 2009.
