I can see Sarge gettin' in and out OK, but I think Healey has an assistant with a large shoehorn to get him in and out!

Roger:

Sorry, a Moggie is slang for any of the Morris family based on the "Minor". The little tradesman's van next to Healey's car is based on the Minor, and the Traveller also, so both are Moggies.

The show was awarded by a popular vote, rather than juried, and everyone had a number to be voted whether a trailer queen or a mudspattered car driven through the copious puddles to get there. Not anywhere as tense as a muscle car, streetrod, or AACA show. I didn't see very many folks really taking themselves seriously.

If you remember the '40 Chev I had, it was a "survivor".

Image

That means never taken apart or restored, so truly a rare thing in this day and age. I took it to an AACA show and the judges really clicked their tongues and waggled their fingers at it over things like the glass was starting to delaminate, there were a couple star-cracks in the paint, moth nips in the interior. It was a lovely car and an original example; truly an amasing thing at 75 years old, but little stuff from age and originality was picked over.

They had the nerve to pan that car, then come back and use it as a reference to judge the restorations! That was the end of American car shows for me.

This is different. It's a meet instead. Most there seemed to just enjoy them for what they are, gather for the fun of it, and they love these things as motors, not badges of rank. This meet could have me enjoy the social aspects again just as fast as the AACA turned me off of it.

Regarding getting in and out, we both can get in and out of our cars with dignity intact, and they are surprisingly comfortable to drive. I have some pretty severe spinal damage and still find the position comfortable (moreso than my wife's Cruiser!) and the entry and exit quite doable without difficulty. One reason of course is neither car even makes a token attempt at possessing a rear seat, so all the space that would have been devoted to that luxury is merely eliminated.

A few yoga moves and you're in! It can be done:

This is about as close as you can get to wearing an automobile.

The Sprite was running rough as a cob until properly warmed up...need to check and see if I have a vacuum leak or something somewhere.

And who knew you could drive a tank on a Maryland highway...you know, the Free State, lol.

No one trailered anything in, so that's an upside in terms of the level of non-craziness of those attending. Truly a drive-in...

It was a blast, great getting to meet Sarge in person, everybody got a door prize, and we didn't have to get pulled from the bog at the end of the day.

One more word.

WONDERFUL :!: :!: :!:

Sounds like a lot more fun than a judged show.

I understand about your Chevy.
Saw the same thing happen in Ohio.

Outstanding photography, documentation, and commentary, gentlemen!

Wasn't like actually being there, but it was d*mn close, and those are some gorgeous, beautiful machines.

Loved that Good Humor truck. One used to prowl my neighborhood when I was a kid. (That, and a Pied Piper).
Not much good memories to look back on, but that was definitely one of them.

Well done, Healey and Sarge! Too cool!!

Drive a tank on Maryland highways? Why not? Who in their right mind would want to try to stop it? Block the highway with police cruisers? Yea, sure. Put out spike plates to deflate the tires? Of course! Shoot their Glocks at it in an attempt to disable it? Might nick the paint job. Besides, just pointing that 72-90 mm. main gun at them might cause white undies to turn color!! Please, can I drive it back home?? Pretty please?

I wonder what one of those beauties cost on the surplus market! Can you imagine calling up your insurance agent for coverage? Hmmm. Got me thinking.

Now, back to the patio...looking to wrap it up today in this glorious San Diego-like weather!!!

Yes, great weather for that kind of work!

It has been decided that I need to go buy a number of 24" x 24" bits of slate and create a new walkway about the side of the house and then around back. My back rejoices as does the local supplier of industrial strength Advil.

Too funny, Wayne...that would trump the Sprite. If done properly I suspect one could put that on a hanger and stow it in the front-hall closet.

Everyone that gets any moving violation of the DC Beltway should be required to drive a P50 for a week.
