Re: Hobo Jungle
Several possible criminal charges come to mind, also, such as :
Reckless endangerment; disregard for human safety/life; willful negligence; failure to control a dangerous animal; callous disregard for the dog as a dangerous weapon. IMO .
As I understand it, dogs MUST be controlled, even on their own property; however, dogs that leave the boundaries of their property to pursue anybody who comes near or simply passes by, say for example, on the opposite side of the street, are mentally ill, having not learned or are willfully ignoring standards of proper and LEGAL conduct. Letting them run at will is like leaving a gun out on your sidewalk for anybody to fall victim to it.

The way I was when I was young I doubt that I would have finished collage. I didn't take any collage preparation classes in high school.
My friends in Vintage church group bought their houses 35 years ago, they were new houses in the San Fernando Valley then and they probably had a smaller house before that. They worried if they could afford the payments. Today those houses are worth $750,000 or more.
I doubt that I would have qualified for the loan or have been able to make the payments.
Today I went to a Vintage friends house for a potluck party. Their yard was as big as a small city block and this is in a high house price area. A sprawling Mexican Hacienda ranch house and a beautiful yard with lots of trees, plants, and flowers. They have a gardener but even so it must take up all their spare time maintaining their yard and house.

The hearing my neighbor and I went to in LA last week we won. About another neighbors Pit Bull that nearly killed my dog and my neighbors also. Cost me $682 and him $2,000. Plus great stress as our loved dogs were badly hurt.
The owner has 5 days to get that dog out of the city of Los Angeles or the LA Dept. of Animal Care and Control will pick it up. And he can't own another Pit Bull for 3 years.
I have never known the people at all but he is only across the street and up one house.
So this danger in the neighborhood will be gone.

...and I'll bet that not for one minute did he ever admit he was culpable or wrong.
Re: Hobo Jungle
I was doing some research on the American Locomotive Company recently and stumbled onto this site/entry:
http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=38348
It's from a few years ago...last time I was up to Schenectady we drove past the location and there's very little left of the facility. Some people get depressed by this sort of thing, but to me it just marks the passage of time. We Americans pride ourselves on being able to constantly reinvent ourselves, and with that these things result.
I found it interesting that "In June of 2010 a development group had purchased 57 acres of land that was at one time part of the ALCo Site for a remarkably low price of half a million dollars. The developer will demolishing Building 332 and more than a dozen others it owns on the site using state Brownfield Program credits. The project will feature condominiums and a marina along 1.5 miles of Mohawk River waterfront, retail shops, commercial offices and possibly a hotel."
I also found the aerial view interesting, giving an overview of the site:

That small white building fronting on the river at the far laft-hand side of the photo is RPI's nuclear lab, featuring a small reactor.
I hope it works out for them...Schenectady sure could use some upside.

This sounds similar to a plan that was developed for Savannah,Ga., several years ago.
I don't know all the details because I don't really care.I'll get back to that.
The project here is now mired in law suits and financial problems according to the newspaper.
A four lane parkway, the Truman Parkway, was proposed in the 1950s for Savannah.
Actual construction started in the late 1970s,I think. It was opened this year,2014.
You see I don't care about these projects because I most likely will be dead when they will be in use so why worry.

Roger, I do firmly believe You are correct. With the way the Federal monies are being let to trickle down to the States that by the tim the Interstate Highway gets finished there will be no need for roads. We will just FLY OVER THEM .rogruth wrote:This sounds similar to a plan that was developed for Savannah,Ga., several years ago.

Isn't the original Interstate System finished?
Today it seems to be receiving additional lanes and connectors of various sorts.

Yesterday as I was sitting down to dinner I smell and see smoke. none of my neighbors were BBQ'ing, I walked around my house and everything looked OK. Then I hear sirens and then a firetruck was in front of my house. They hooked a hose to a hydrant and then drove down the street. The hose is in about 30" lengths with a metal coupling, the metal coupling was hitting the street, plop, plop. At first I thought they had made a bad mistake but I now figure thats how they unwind the heavy hose from the truck.
Just then we all could see a great plume of smoke about a block and a half away and the fire trucks were already going there.
I've lived here 25 years with no fires and now in about 6 months there have been 3 fires nearby. All from trashy backyards with run down storage buildings, one was a bunch of old motor homes.
Firefighters here make $100,000 and retire at 50 with full pay at their highest rate for life, and healthcare for their entire family for life. When a half dozen openings open up thousands apply.

Police, teachers, military and a few others should have at least the same.

Yup. Police protect lives. Firemen save lives. Teachers build lives. To say the least.

Doctors?
How far you want to carry the theme? Some of the chemistry I've developed has saved and extended the lives of cancer patients better than anything other available drugs. I'm sort of content to be able to say that I might have done a bit of good, made a bit of a difference on the positive side, and let it go at that.

Re: Hobo Jungle
I'd go with doctors if they would as a profession go back to the Hippocratic oath to which they once ascribed. My experiences with them in the last decade or so has me not very supportive of the notion, for the profession is more interested in how they can treat rather than cure, so as to string out the opportunities to fleece the patient.
What part of this don't the MDs already have and more?

Rufus,
I'm referring to the above by v8 that implies that those types in California do not deserve what they earn.
My point is/was that they do deserve it and the list is endless.
And I feel like you.In my nearly fifty years of teaching I have been told that I affected many lives. To know
that is great for my ego but better pay may have helped my physical being a little more.

I realize that, Roger.
Yes, it is rare that I have been in any situation where having more money would not have made things more positive,
However, I think now that having more time might be more valuable.
