Roger,
Need help? Expanding gas coming out the muzzle of a rifle is like the exahust from a jet engine. It propels the rifle backwards with great force.
Look at the diverting fins in the muzle brake.

See their shape? They remind me of the thrust revesal cones or clam-shells on a jet engine used to brake the forward velocity of the aircraft. The fins
in the muzzle brake catch the expanding gases coming out of the muzzle and redirect them toward the shooter. This change in direction pulls on the
rifle (reverse thrust) so the weapon does not slam the shooter so hard.
In addition to diverting a large portion of a shot's blast rearward and to the side of the muzzle, a muzzle brake adds 5 to 10 dB to the normal noise
level perceived by the shooter. Barrett recommends wearing both ear plugs and ear muffs.
Hope everyone had a good Thanks Giving.
