Murph: It's true. Our WWII carriers did have wooden decks. Made them particularly vulnerable to kamikazi attacks. The Brits, OTOH, had armored decks and were much better protected.

Re: A few CVRR pictures and some other related pictures....
IJN carriers had wooden flight decks as well.
The downside of armored flight decks was the limited number of aircraft that could be carried (USS Enterprise could carry/operate up to 90 aircraft, while HMS Illustrious topped out at 36). The Brit carriers typically had armor-plate of around three to three-and-a-half inches over their hanger-decks and boiler rooms. They had to sacrifice load to offset the weight of the flight deck. Another problem with the Brit carriers was the tendency to roll severely in heavy weather due to the top-side weight.

I taught 43 years full-time and never had tenure.
I can only speak 1st hand for Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky as that is where my children or grand-children attend/attended and they have tenure.
So, teachers only get paid for a certain number of teaching days (even though their pay is spread out over 12 months). So, holiday breaks, snow days and such is one them? I didn't know that.

In most states now even "snow days", weather days of any kind must be made up. There are probably exceptions. There are no more "Acts of God"
in public schools. A private school will be governed by the accrediting association to which it belongs. Many private schools now belong to the same associations that public schools use.
Repeat. Teachers have no paid holidays of any kind.

Once upon a time, once upon a time, once upon a time........but I wonder if the average person could even afford to rent one.
Interesting that that 2-6-0 kept it's striping as late as 1920.
Betting that was taken not long after the N&SV acquired and re-lettered it.

Where I am and at academic institutions, you get put up for tenure and if not granted you have a year or so to pack your bags..... Academic positions - wager they get 500+ applications and I'm probably low on that. You don't get tenure a few times - you won't get more chances. There are lot of variables that get evaluated, but a major one is how successful you are at getting grant money - and a big check mark is associated with getting grant from specific places, like an R01 from NIH. Another variable is publication numbers and where and impact scores and H# index......... I continue to be amazed that anyone goes down this pathway anymore for a career. The wash out rate has to be crazy.
BTW, I heard today that the USA is the most medicated country for depression......cannot imagine why that could be so,

Also on E. Market St., in Chambersburg, PA celebrating the anniversary of the burning.....

at least 3 modes of transportation featured...

Until I expanded this I had noticed there are 2 trolleys here - there's an open car trailing the lead car.

Look closely at the poles, the open is leading; plus, in the overall picture just under the arch appears to be the end of track. I suspect that the open will depart first, the closed is his follower and will depart sometime later.

Rufus,
I think the tenure discussion above may have answered some questions for some readers.

Better eyes than mine! And, I think you are correct about the departure and end of line - these may in fact be C&G cars and not the CG&W then heading East to Caledonia.

Maybe, I hope, yes. There are a lot of myths about tenure and what it means and what it's value might be -- I know I was exceedingly lucky to be granted tenure and that the committee that reviewed this was very contentious.
