I'm in for another cold one, too. OK Jon, fess up - did you put that photo together yourself for fun? I went through my books, scratched my head, then gave it a closer look - it IS a Niagara (4-8-4), but with an L4 smoke box, Hudson size drivers, a non-existent number in the 6100s (the final Niagara was 6025) and certain telling details like the cab number oddly out of focus. This Super Niagara would have certainly been a runner, and it looks a lot better then the P&LE A2-class Berkshire finale did. So, am I the only one looking foolish (yea, I know, Patten really DID design it...) or is there a "rest of the story." If you did do it, it is a work of art in terms of quality. If it ends that the NYC actually had this thing and ran it, the next round is on me...

I'll check it out. Now you know why I have that fat third rail down the center of all my track - it's electroshock to keep my prototype insanity in check! When I did HO, those boys were CRAZY. Looking forward to seeing pics of your B&M engine when it gets in.

I agree, Tramp, the Super Niagara would be a keeper...Daisy with a space bar?

Amalie, you might not know about my FORMER cat Lenny. He pished all over my modern ZW. Hasn't been right since. And why would it?

Jon, I got to say, I really do prefer the Berk to the Mohawk.

The Super Niagara

Postby amalie » Wed Mar 02, 2005 8:02 am

Had a chance to jump to the link, Jon. The engine is indeed a fantasy "S3" that "was not retired until 1967" (oh,well - we could wish). Still, it had me going. I take it that the B&M engine you bought has the Coffin-type feedwater heater that wrapped over the lip of the smokebox.

That dog hunts...I would give it a Patten-approval >>>

"The idea is not to die for your country, but to make the other poor b*st*rd die for his"....

Still, I'm partial to the Elesco feedwater heaters - my kids always said "I like the one with the curly-cue. " That B&M deal was all business...

"where you heading General?"

"Berlin! I'm gonna shoot that paper hanging sonofabitch myself!"

My Dad served in Patton's Army - the Fourth Armored Division, touted as the Patton's finest. It was the 4th that covered 100 miles in the race to relieve the 101st Airborne at Bastogne.

Actually, I think that Berk is a damn handsome locomotive. It might be unusual, but I think it's a good design. It has a great profile, nice balance, etc. I don't see what's ugly about it.
