I have just spent most of today listening to Viv Stanshall's full length version of "Sir Henry at Rawlinson End" followed by Kevin Ayers "Whatevershebringswesing" no that's not a typo, I especially recommend 'Song from the Bottom of a Well' and then Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells".

Where would I be without YouTube?

All good stuff there, Mike!

Most of the time when I'm sitting at the computer writing I tend to leave one of my internet radio stations on from Live365 called Moving Through Space that come in from England somewhere. All electronic and ambient music that fills the space w/o distracting...

Loved Deep Purple - Richie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, and all -- actually put out albums years earlier with symphonies. And, I've got a copy of Perfect Strangers.....

Wayne,

You actually listened to Dimmu Borgir? I've listened to some hard stuff to tolerate and that rates right up there in the painful end of the spectrum.

Well Rufus if you like ambient music you probably like Tangerine Dream? My favorite of their albums is 'Phaedra' which I find particularly helpful for artistic inspiration.

What baffles me, though, is that my missus who's very compatible with me in most respects, absolutely cannot take my musical choices at all. She LOATHES them, despite my best efforts to show her their finest work, can't understand it. Still she also gets off on ancient beatnik stuff, Dyan, Baez and some fairly dreadful Soul and Country so I guess thats just the way the cookie crumbles, pity though. I do some of my best work powered by Purple, her loss!

Hey, can I get an "Amen" here for Fleetwood Mac?
Jefferson Airplane?
How 'bout Moody Blues' Nights in White Satin?
Riders on the Storm by The Doors.
Hendrix. That voice ! The guitar - told the truth 'cause it moved along w/ you; knew where you were headed. And other stuff.
Santana's Black Magic Woman. Flawless, if you knew.
Those bands took you places, man, places far, far away, but still here, part of a person's substance - if ya' listened and let it take ya'.
They all said plenty; spoke directly to us; lifted folks up and gentled 'em back down to earth.
A ride I wouldn't have missed for anything.

I'm talkin' Go Your Own Way and
Rhiannon, Bikermike, and Dreams. That's the only Fleetwood time I care about. Can you resist her voice, there? Nope. :)

Check it out! the ORIGINAL Fleetwood Mac

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y0JVMXa ... re=related

I knew this band when they started out, they played local church halls and were bloody fantastic. Those of us from that era refer to what the band became as 'Plastic Mac' which is not to say that your opinion is wrong or that I'm putting your choice down but there's no comparison and my musician friends tend to refer to my choices as "three chord raunch rock" so I'm probably just an old rocker too set in my ways to appreciate change.

I gave up on the Floyd after Syd left too. Its just a case of badge engineering that riles me, like calling the BMW 'mini' a Mini.

Mike,

Tangerine Dream, Klaus Shultze, and whole long list of others as well, but then I range all over the place in what I listen to.....Prog-metal....Techno-Goth... Opera......

I have Syd's albums and all of the early Floyd -- particularly like to listen to Atom Heart Mother and Meddle.

Two completely different Fleetwood Mac bands -- same name but very little in common but 2 members.....

Do happen to like the Judas Priest cover of The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown) quite bit more than the Mac version though,

Here's another of my faves and this ones a bit strange IF you listen to the entire album. The original Small Faces before Rod Stewart took 'em over, it's 'Ogdens Nut Gone Flake' and Sir Stanley Unwins narration is priceless!

Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones, and Jimmy Winston.......

Marriot went on to Humble Pie with that kid Frampton -- "I Don't need no Doctors"....died in '91(?)

Jones was playing drums for the Who after Moon died, Lane put out that album with Townsend, too. Don't know about Winston....

Yes Rufus. Listening to Dimmu Borgir reveals just a little bit more of me to me. Let me explain...

I am no longer afraid of the dark, afraid of the unknown, afraid of getting old, of dying, of the Devil, or simply of the strange! And yet, Dimmu Borgir (means "dark castles/fortresses" in English) reaches deep within my twisted mind to the place where my worst nightmares used to live. It taps into my childhood fears of shadows, shapes, and slightly opened closet doors.

Example: Those who know me know of my thirst for knowledge. Here is a passage from Dimmu Borgir's Vredesbyrd [English: Burden of Wrath]

For den tro du besitter
Er intet annet enn avsmak og hovmod
Og din nøden etter viten
Er en overflod av hån og skjend

English:
For the faith you posses
Is nothing but disgust and arrogance
And your need for knowledge
Is an abundance of mockery and desecration

Fascinating!

Interesting, Wayne., interesting.

I do listen to or will attempt to listen to just about anything once in all fairness. 12-tome piano and 1/4 tone pieces from Ives and Schoenberg and Berg and opera from Glass and Wilson and organ from Messiaen.....and then all the way to Satanic death metal....and then to Miles Davis.......... and back home to wherever that is today musically.

There's interesting stuff to be gleaned along the way if one is willing to try and harvest it

Disappointing!

That was Iggy (sans Stooges) doing an extremely lovely version of "I want to be your dog",

I shall have to correct that and now have done so!

Now a link to VDGG doing a live version of "Killer", :D

I used to listen to the Vanilla fudge, like Season of the witch that I just loved. I also liked the Ventures, talk about different strokes for different folks. But my best est band is definitely The Mac. I have almost all the modern Mac's cd's I just love music...But when I was stationed in Germany in the Army a song came out by Blood rock called DOA. It was a morbid song and my wife just loved it.

I think the Ventures are great! I had their album 'Ventures in Space' and wore it out I played it so much. If you like the Ventures try looking up The Shadows on YouTube. Hank Marvin was a great guitar player, Tony Meehan and Jet Harris were great too.
