It seems to me that the style/design og autos started to change in the 1990s, at least in the U.S. A glace at a car could determine what it was in most cases. From the side view today they all are almost the same. T he differences today are front and back and to me most of them look like big leering
fish with weird eyes. Even though GM/Chrysler/Ford cars had similarities each had enough differences that made them easy to recognize.
They seem to be selling so they must be making what people want. This is meant for any brand. Exotic vehicles are a different case.

Rufus,
Is that an actual working vehicle you posted just above?
If so, what is it?

CAFE standards dictated lowest aero drag to permit bitty engines. Thus wind-tunnel-aided design, so that almost all cars have the same shape....unless you spend megabux on exotic cars

That's an excellent description. I would only add cars from Japan to the mix.

It has seemed to me, for decades, now, that as soon as Mercedes made a design change to the bodies of its sedans and coupes, Lexus just happened to mirror - mirror - those designs. And then Honda seemed sure to follow.

Big beans.

We are in agreement, for the most part. As I am driving around, I've noticed that, for the most part, among the newer cars, I have to look for the badge on the hood or trunk to know for certain what company's car it is.

For example, I used to be able to spot and identify the several Maserati in town but can't, nowadays, since the profiles and attitudes of several other cars look very similar.

Back-in-the-day, nobody, absolutely nobody, mistook a 1962 Lincoln Continental for a 1962 Cadillac....
...or LeBaron. Mustang. Impala. Plymouth. Kaiser.....

These don't look too much like anything else, at least not at their price point

Too low? Too high? It was an arbitrary number. Have not bought a new car in close to 8 years. $40 work better for you - top Subaru Outback is around there....
