Not enough information to know.

Sticking with my guess (uranium isotope separation) mercury could be used to dissolve the uranium in lieu of making it a gas.

Reference:
Extraction of 9201-4 Sludge Centrifuge Cake 10. 3. Mass Balance for Extraction of Mercury and Uranium from 9201-4 Sludge.
http://www.osti.gov/bridge/servlets/pur ... 541809.pdf

Mercury could be used to balance the centrifuge.

US Patent 4919646 - System for automatically balancing a centrifuge in operation (using mercury.)

US Patent 3921898 - Test tube retainers are mounted on annular supports on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of a rotor. The annular supports have a chamber adapted to contain a liquid (mercury.) Oppositely disposed chambers communicate with one another by a conduit means. The tube retainers apply a force to the liquid whereby centrifugal reaction forces on the rotor are balanced.

The mercury could serve as a medium for gradient centrfugation wherein based on molecular weight and isotope, the various isotopes would travel through the Hg to various distances while undergoing centrifugation thereby allowing for separation of an enriched portion that could be separated by just cooling the Hg until solid, slicing into portions, then extracting the enriched portion out of the Hg. Repeat as needed until the required enrichement level is achieved.

A very similar process is used for extracting high molecualr weight biological fractions using a sucrose gradient...

Another separation method that was used were the calutrons:

At least one building of these still exists at ORNL on standby...

That (enriched uranium dissolved in mercury) might explain the discoloration of the mercury reported by someone.

Right there, Rufus, I could not repeat, from memory, what you just wrote if you paid me ten million dollars. But if you gave me the money and a really good pizza, I probably could read it aloud for ya'.

By the way, just the other day, I saw an old clip showing Harpo pull that cup of hot coffee out of his pocket for the guy who asked him for the money to buy one, and I laughed right out loud, once again, after 50+ years; PLUS, I knew what was coming! Timeless. Priceless.

That's why I enjoy hanging out with you guys!!!!
This one fellas spin on the bell is pretty funny......

The Germans are coming!

Die Glocke (German for "The Bell") is the name of a purported top secret Nazi scientific technological device. The only source for this is the books of Polish aerospace defense journalist and military historian Igor Witkowski, which claim it to be a secret weapon, or Wunderwaffe.

Just days after Operation: Overlord, Germany knows that defeat in Europe is unstoppable. Top priority is given to The Bell Project - a highly secret attempt to master time travel. On Wednesday June 14 1944, SS scientists in a German facility known as Der Riese ("The Giant") near the Wenceslas mine open the only known time portal using the Bell device.

Their objective was to travel back in time 5 years and prevent the invasion but something went horribly wrong. Instead of traveling back in time, they traveled forward in time! 65 years to be exact!

When the time line isn't changed, SS scientists worked for months trying to determine what happened. They figure out that they have sent troops to the future but cannot do anything about it as US forces raid the facility and classify all the information found. Leaving nothing to chance, General Eisenhower decides to send forward a small group of American soldiers to the future. He also creates a secret document that is to be forwarded to the Office of the President of the United States and not to be opened until May 1, 2009.

Under advisement from the military, President Obama has a small highly trained and highly secretive joint task force dispatched to the area where the Nazis will appear from the past. Their job is to stop the Germans from using secret weapons to restart WWII and forever doom the free world!

Who's Who?
Running that red block Charlie.

At the risk is being a "ditto head," I agree. Many of the MTJ forumites have been centrifugalized over on another forum. Those that rose to the top diffused over here.

Hmmm.... Well..... Errr.... And here I thought that just some slightly less than common knowledge,  Then again, maybe it's just the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.....

The brothers Marx were and are timeless; slowly going through the Buster Keaton film catalog these days myself - again, you know what's coming and it still knocks you off the chair laughing - comedy done right is just hard to beat!

BTW, I can recommend renting "Buster Keaton Rides Again/The Railrodder" -- rides across Canada on a railroad handcart & was one of the his final films.

In reference to "the bell".If the Nazis had all the stuff that has been attributed to them, why did they not win the war?

In their case, I think a significant part of their successful style was the follow-thru of their facial expressions, esp. Harpo w/his looks of incredulity, faux-denial, feigned "innocence", and of course, the collective unabashed pluck and irreverence that did the trick, IMHO. The things Groucho would say.... oi vey!

Excess.
Plus, Hitler was an arrogant fool, not using his head but following his base impulses and temper. Also, he purged himself of some of his greatest minds. Oh, and one more thing, he was wrong.
Just my opinion (as a War Baby.)

Murph,

We were thinking that Die Glocke might have been a centrifuge. I had centrifuge in mind when Jon said, "That's why I enjoy hanging out with you guys!!!! " With that and centrifuge in my head I thought of Antonin Prandtl who in 1864 invented the first dairy centrifuge in order to separate cream from milk. Many of my favorite friends on this forum have been banned from a certain other forum. I have a vision of the people on that other train forum as mad spinning dervish like individuals. In my imagination all that spinning separates the cream of the train nuts from the idiots. They even spun Norm Charbonneau off the forum at one time. The cream of the crop tends to end up on MTJ.

Norm was here for a while, but when they let him back, he returned. If they ever expelled me from the nut house, I don't think I would go back.
