Need a bit of a refresher here on "Flag Ettiquette", if memory serves me correctly the "Blue Field with the Fifty Stars" is always displayed on the upper left side. The reason I ask is that I just picked up one of the Lionel UP Desert Victory engines and was looking for a good caboose to go with it. One of the candidates so far is a nice looking Frisco but check out the flag on it's side by the steps:

Is my memory accurate or not?

I know some mite consider it being "anal" but to me ride height, etc is trivial but the flag is not.

I remember a former Marine with whom I worked was upset because the security guards at my hospital wore the flag patch on their right shoulders, with the blue field of stars as you describe, on the upper left. He said it was supposed to be on the upper right, because then it looked like the flag was going honorably into battle, whereas with the blue in the upper left, it looks like the flag is falling backward in retreat.

If it were me, I'd prefer the flag on the caboose as is.

Jon will set the story straight.

Doug, The reverse flag symbol is now acceptable, just as on our uniforms. The field of blue must always go towards the chest or as in your case, to the forward motion of the caboose. The reason? Reversing it would be a symbol of retreat.
So buy it!

The flag on the caboose works if it is on the "front/forward" end.

Where is it on the other side?

So far have only found two by MTH, #2 :
There really isn't a whole lot to choose from, so far only the two MTH.

Was able to do some "googles" and found the "Flag" info, thanks for the responses.

Tending to favor the Frisco unless I can find something better.

I went to seek Dirt's distinguished, left coast relative, Fairbanks Dirt, who lives over the ridge from us.

My hope was that the generous gentleman would have some Grey Poupon and Moet that he could spare. He did.

I returned on a washboard road.

I discovered the reason The Dirt no longer drives rear wheel drive automobiles.

I guess you could say that was the end of it.

We live in somewhat more modest circumstance. Jahan has requested that I level the Airstream. One of these days I'll get to it.

Bud, you're d*mn near certifiable!
I think that washboard and no rear suspension has scrambled your egg a bit!

But hey! An Airflow and a Farmall and a wife that has the joe percolating when you wake up in the morning, and what else does one need in Life??

Noontime and already at 101*, maybe I should load up the p/u and go squat on san's driveway. Hell it has to be considerably cooler at the coast than here.

Don't know which would be worse, drinking the Moet then riding the washboard or riding the washboard then trying to open the Moet. Plenty fizzy in either case.

For that type drinking environment I would highly recommend a malt liquor!

You are one hundred per cent correct that flag etiquette is not a trivial matter. I agree w/ you fully; in fact, I am glad for the conversation you have inspired here. It was good to learn the answer to your inquiry.

On that theme, can you tell me, guys, when flying our flag from the front porch of our house, along w/ two other flags - one for trains, and one for various holidays - if you are facing the house, should the flag for our country be seen on the viewer's right or on his left? Therefore, standing on my porch, looking out at the street, I have it on my left. Properly done?

And while we are on this topic, I must confess that when a U.S. flag gets worn out or tattered, we give it to a VFW member for proper disposal. We do not simply throw it in the garbage. Perhaps, that is old fashioned of us, but for us the flag of this country represents far too much glory, triumph, suffering, prestige, accomplishment, valiant service by millions in our history, and a whole people who are good and generous and grand at heart, hard-working and fair, brave and adventurous - to the core - for simple disposal of a worn flag to be taken casually. IMO.
