I do NOT understand what the Russian did.

Russia used the social media to propagate false/phony information on a massive scale. They used the tools that are normally assigned for "targeted advertising" to find an audience that would be receptive to the material they were pushing. They also looked at the profiles of their targeted audience to maximize the likelihood of the postings to "go viral", aka be reposted to other "like minded" people. They created fake/bot accounts as their launch platforms and directed their material at the target audience. The primary targets were in effect recruited as "assets" without even realizing it. They were the ones spreading the dubious material.

The main difference between this and "old school" propaganda schemes is that they could easily find receptive targets using social medias own tools and the ease and speed at which the disinformation can be spread. Flyers/publications can be ignored, radios or TV's turned off. Direct contact with a stranger often leaves clues about the deception and there is some natural level of suspicion. The internet provides a level of anonymity. The mechanism of the real attack (aka the flood of repostings by real people) is coming from sources that a person in more likely to trust, people they actually know. Unfortunately there is a tendency for people to believe almost anything they see/hear/read on the internet.

There are no editors, no fact checkers, and almost no liability. The real danger is that there is no critical assessment of the information going on. People find "channels" that back their point of view and tune out anything that doesn't. This behavior can result in hilarious interchanges at gatherings when a person gets caught in their own web of illogic and storms off after being confronted with it.

I would add that TV & radio are not immune to this phenomenon

Where did folks go for reliable information back in the 60's and 70's when doing research-papers for high school and college classes? What made them authentic?

OK. That makes sense.
How can the average person (me) tell the difference?
Remember I have limited computer/internet skills.
I'm afraid the younger folks are part of the "If it is
on the internet it must be true" folks.Remember
when "pictures don't lie" was believed by everybody?

Wouldn't it take a lot of people to post the sometimes
untruthful, twisted facts that are presented as facts?

I still ask who can be trusted for facts and why?

I think we got info from what was considered to be reliable sources at that time. Most encyclopedias were in that category and some magazines had
developed reputations of reliability. So where do we find that kind of reliability today and know that it is acceptable?

Difficult, but blind acceptance is the wrong pathway - question, question and question again. If there seems a dubious thread to the fabric, pull it and see if it unravels.

When it comes to politics, none of it has been reliable because they have all had an agenda they were pursuing.

Yes, but mot of us knew that; it's the numbers of people that still do not know that to be that remain led about like sheep.

The Library? At least that's where I went. It costs a lot of money to print and distribute hard copy. You try to cross check everything to avoid legal hassles of copyright infringement, libel, etc.....

One upon a time people went to libraries and even read books........now it seems that they go there to use the computers to surf the net, while the books rest quietly on the shelves.

A lot of libraries have also quietly disposed of old reference books - "it's all on-line now".......

When I was in school at any level , encyclopedias published by different companies and from different parts of the world
were always available in schools and libraries along with those huge Websters Unabridged Dictionary. Just by checking
through these one could get most information needed and lead to other sources. We at least thought we were getting
good info. Don't know where to look these days.

...and where did those libraries, encyclopedias, and "reference books" and magazines get their information, which we trusted and, therefore, cited in our footnotes and bibliographies?

What "social media" have we been using in Russia for "years"?

I didn't say social media. My point was we have been interesting in other countries for years.

We will even take out a dictator if we don't like them.

And nobody interferes in our elections more than our own media. They call it freedom of speech.

"Interferes" or informs? Educate me.

There was actually trust put into the academics and the researchers that assembled that information. Once upon a time, we could trust those sources. That has since faded to trust but verify, doubt all, and discount anything that one disagrees with or finds inconvenient.

Some of those same sources are now available on-line.

With respect to cross checking, reputable material has citations, references that can searched, independently is you wish (in case you don't trust the hyper links). If you have suspicions about US news sources, try BBC or Canadian sources (cbcnews.com). At least those are in English. It's not such a bad idea to get a complete outsiders view of what's going on over here. I'd like to say the same about our sources re foreign events but we're so inward focused that it's hard to get real news about other places unless something really bad has happened.
