Doug,
My vote would be San Elijo in Cardiff. From the bike lane, north side of Cardiff Campgrounds, you should be able to get a panoramic view from Swami's to just north of the Solana Beach station.
The Miramar Y (32 degrees 52 minutes north 117 degrees 10 minutes west on Google Earth) might be challenging unless you want to become an F-18 Hornet target. OTOH, it would be interesting to see 3751 get itself turned around.

Doug,
I think I have a winner for you. Carmel Valley Road between I5 and Coast Highway (Camino Del Mar). Latitude and Longitude 32 56'00.66"N,117 15'11.06"W, Enter these coordinates in Google Maps. It's approximately 2302 Carmel Valley Road, the parking lot for a convenience market, Carmel Valley Market Wine and Spirits.
Looking to the Southwest towards Torrey Pines State Reserve, you will have a fantastic view of 3751 as she barrels through the overpass in the beach parking lot at Carmel Valley Road and Camino Del Mar, crosses Soledad Lagoon, and disappears into Sorrento Valley.
You can actually hike along the berm in Soledad Lagoon along the ROW and get up close and personal; you would be looking up at the drive train about 12' above you. Cinderdick don't like it. Chances he's out there on Sunday is low. I've outrun him on a cyclocross bike several times. There's too many directions for you to go, so he can't pin you.

I was driving for the US 1 the last night, the only bar open was a show girls club. I keep driving for a while until the next light, I was thirsty too and the left arrow turn green, the sign show U turns, after few minutes I went in the parking lot. The rain will start soon, I though.

Dark rainy day here in northern NE. Wish my trains were set up just to hear a whistle or two, watch a headlight rounding the bend.
Andre, nice new avatar.
Jon, you finally received your 3rd Rail dream engine.
Pete, is the tractor running?
Rossi is on the pole for Mugello.

A high of 93 degree's and sunny down here!!!
I'm fixin' to grab a cooler of iced down brews, the boys, and head down the hill to the pool.
Tramp, actually my dream engine is the Dreyfuss followed by the J3a Super Hudson both of which are in production at Scott's new manufacturer in Korea. It looks like I may have to pass on the Old Rivets GG1 and UP 4-8-4 to get them- such is life!!!!

[quote="dougdagrump"]San and any other SoCal steam fans,
This is a cut and paste regarding an event for this sunday:
A high speed round trip along the scenic California Coast will take place on on Sunday, June 1, 2008. The Central Coast Railway Club and the Pacific Locomotive association are sponsoring a fun filled historic train trip behind the magnificent ex-Santa Fe 3751 steam locomotive.
The train will depart the Los Angeles Union Station at approximately 7:45 am (exact time will be on the tickets) with intermediate stops at Fullerton and Irvine and a planned 11:30 am arrival in downtown San Diego. The return trip will leave from the San Diego Sante Fe Station at approximately 2:30 pm with a planned 6:30 pm arrival back at the Los Angeles Union Station.
I'll be on the train on Sunday with a few of my friends. Hope to see some of you there. I'll post some pix next week!
