Hobo Jungle
Another long day, another bazillion med students and interns poking and prodding, another trip to Ophthalmology to make sure this isn't affecting her eyeball or vision, another visit from Otolaryngology, and one from Infectious Diseases. You can tell she's a hobo- she's been suffering all these travails with patience and stoicism.
The PICC line insertion (a peripheral IV that extends almost to her heart) hit a snag when it took a left turn at Albuquerque and headed up her neck when it should have taken a southern route, but it got corrected under live radiography while she was still sedated-asleep.
But the good news:- it's 50% less angry looking, though still swollen, and we're not only out of the woods but halfway across the field, no surgery necessary, and while she's still punked-out, she's got the giggles back.
Damn glad we have this kick-ass hospital, and not some podunk joint out in East Bumf*ck. Thank God for small favors
Thank God for friends, too. I was feeling as close to crazy as I've been in a long time.
And Leah was thrilled to hear all the states from which well-wishes were forth-coming.
Love you guys.

Pete,
I have been holding out for a great result and full recovery for Leah, but like Daisy, I was holding my breath until better news was forthcoming. Let her know that the San Diegans continue to pray for her continued recovery now at this time of need, and that we pray for her at all times, in every endeavor, as her young life progresses.
Blessings on you and Kim for being the vigilant, caring parents that you are. If this had to happen, it is fortunate that the two of you are there for her and took responsibility to obtain the best of care.
Warm regards,
San

Better still! She can now see out her left eye without having to manually pry it open. And it's gone from a Farmall color to closer to an Allis Chalmers.
The pediatrician thought there was a good chance for discharge today, but then the Infectious Disease doc thought, due to her stamina being in the tank, and that she hasn't eaten in 48 hours, that she should stay another day. Luckily, he has no veto power, so we'll lobby around the rat-basta... um ...him.
It's likely the antibiotics that are nauseating her, so another day in the hospital ain't gonna help a hill of beans, as we'll be doing those meds at home for another two weeks. And she's wicked homesick.
If the nurses are Angels of Mercy, then our wing in the Children's Hospital could well be renamed Mercy Street. They've been awesome.
Well, magician show in the Children's lobby at 1:30, so more later.
JB, so nice to hear from you again. You've had kids, you've been through it. Come back more often.
Daisy, Tramp, Jon, Roger, San, AG,Hev and Patty, Mitch, Wayne, there's more but i"m in a hurry,... my deepest gratitude.

Mule, hell. WE have Rosie, the attack-pug!
She could bark the dang cat to death. Either that, or the cat would die laughing.
Well, we're home. Probably a day too soon, but screw it. She'll get a lot more sleep here- she was asleep in my car before we cleared the hospital property. And only two days removed from talk about surgery... simply amazing what modern pharmacology has wrought. 60-80 years ago, this may have been a death sentence had it turned to meningitis.
Our little hobo outran ol' cinderdick! Mostly thanks to the benefit of experience of all the hobos here. The Jungle abides!

San, that certainly lends credence to the term: more ornery than a mule.
If you agree with the Progressives, it's freedom of speech. If you disagree, it's hate speech. There are no alternatives.
Andre, she's back home and doing much better. Poor Pete and Kim must have gone through hell. I say it's time to offer Leah a hobo salutation and send her a get-well-quick arrow from the Jungle. March will end, spring will come.
