I had that experience once. Living in the desert it does not happen around here, but the tenth time I climbed Telescope Peak, Death Valley, I decided to do it on cross country skis. The weather in 1969 was about the same as it is this year in Death Valley.

Wildrose Road..................Expect snow near the Charcoal Kilns; 4x4 to Mahogany Flat due to snow and ice.

Roads Outside Death Valley:
Hwy 50, Hwy 88 and I-80....Chains or 4x4 with snow tires required.
CA Hwy 395 ..................... CLOSED in the Bridgeport area. Chains or 4x4 with snow tires north of Bishop. High wind advisory. Travel not recommended for high profile vehicles.

I parked at the Charcoal Kilns and skied up to Telescope Peak. Stayed there overnight. A blizzard came up while I was camped out in a sheltered spot. Next morning everything was covered with another two to three feet of fresh powder snow. It was soooo quiet. The only sound on the way back to the Charcoal Kilns was the shhhhhh of my skis.

When I arrived my car was gone. Remembering where I parked it, I started digging with a ski. Got my shovel out of the back of the car and dug the rest of it out. The engine turned over but would not start. No gas in the carburetor. I dribbled gas into the carburetor from my gas can until the engine warmed up enough to run on its own, then dug a path to the trail while it idled.

When I got down to the Wildrose Ranger Station, I stopped to let the Ranger know that I was leaving. He was surprised that I was back so soon (I had planned to be up there two nights.) I told him that I was surprised how hungry skiing uphill made me. I ate two days food on the way up.

Then he wanted to know the conditions on the ridge. It was fresh powder when I traversed it, both days. He explained that they had lost four people up there the year before because they slipped off the icy ridge. I asked about their equipment. They had snow shoes, cramp-ons and ice axes... and the second two were experienced Sierra Nevada Rescue people that went up to find the first two. They didn't find the four bodies until the snow melted that Spring.

I thought it strange that he did not tell me that story when I checked in to give him my itinerary. The only advice he gave me, when I told him I planned to park at Mahogany Flat, was (looking at my 1969 Ford LTD Wagon) "I don't know if you can make it that far. I can only get my jeep to the Charcoal Kilns."

No Wayne, I don't get it. MTJ wouldn't allow a bit-map so I re-opened in paint and saved as a jpeg, but when I posted from the MTJ Photo account, the image looked like a thumbnail. So just now, I did Layout 21 which is one I'm currently workin' on, and loaded it to my photo account, and it said it was successful, and it actually showed both layouts in my account, but when I went back to get it for another post, it wasn't there.

Yes, it looked like a thumbnail because, 1) you used the thumbnail and 2) the image code has the word "thumbs" in it. Try clicking on the thumbnail and using the medium size image that appears. Or you can modify the image code where you write these messages.

If you change [ img ]http://modeltrainjournal.com/photopost/data/500/thumbs/Layout_20.JPG[ /img ]

to [ img ]http://modeltrainjournal.com/photopost/data/500/medium/Layout_20.JPG[ /img ]

you will get the medium sized image.

And it follows that [ img ]http://modeltrainjournal.com/photopost/data/500/Layout_20.JPG[ /img ]

is the largest image you can get.

Not that I know of. But, when you left click the thumbnail, a medium size image appears in MTJ Photos. If you copy the URL of that image, you will be able to post a medium size image.

If you left click the medium size image, the original size (large*) image will appear. You may then copy the URL for the original size image (large*.)

Your terminology does not match mine. That may be one source of confusion. Maybe you are using a MAC?

*By the way, "large" is not a choice in URLs from MTJ Photos. Just deleting "thumb/" or "medium/" gives the large image.

I can see that you are "getting it" now. Keep playing with images. That is how we all learned to post pictures.

It was too lean. The choke should have taken care of that, but the float bowl ran out of gas. It tried to start the first time and then just quit. I removed the filter and looked into the carb. No gas squirted out the jets when I operated the throttle.

Many people suggested water in the fuel line had frozen. I had added a fuel additive to absorb water (smelled like alcohol) before the trip. It is just one of many mysteries in life.
