I agree, Mitch, especially those high ceilings. No longer practical for heating/cooling, but nothing accentuates space better than a high ceiling.

Still a design element in today's high priced houses. The heating/cooling part aside it always seemed to me to be a waste that could have been usable sq footage in the 2nd story.

The Lutherans built tall, sturdy, fortress-like buildings. Must be that northern European influence. Most of the ones I've been in have well-appointed interiors, as well. No expense seems to have been spared.

A reasonable supposition, and an interesting smaller house -- seen a kit somewhere that could be bashed into it - that porch roof is interesting.

And that parsonage seems a bit more well-worn and less perky than the church edifice. I’d imagine the materials involved dictated that. Pennsylvania brick edifices could remain largely unchanged through the years , as has been the situation with my entire Pennsylvania brick childhood suburban neighborhood , which to this day seems only to have changed its lawn and porch furniture. The houses all appear as they did the day I graduated out to begin my future, several decades ago . Loved that place.

The money to maintain the parsonage was also probably marginal and/or came out of the pocket of its occupant.
