Soccer game today, third of the season, for my 9-year-old son Aaron.
We are 0 and 2 thus far, a team small in stature and experience.
We had to play Berwick, undefeated, who had beaten their last opponent by a score of 10 to 0.
There’s at least one team, and a coach, like this in every league. You’ve all run into them. What I’m saying is that there is no excuse for there to be a score like that. You can ‘sub’ out your better players, or at least put them back in goal and on defense, so you don’t run-up a score like that. Inexcusable and loutish.
As is my hobo luck, our coach and his son, (a super-nice kid who is one of our three best strikers and the fastest legs on the team), had a church function today, and he asked me to ‘sub’ as sacrificial-lam…I mean, sub as coach.
He suggested, being a practical man, and as a way to prevent getting killed, that we focus on defense and disruption, to try and keep the score out of humiliation-range. So before the game started, I had the kids down by the goal, stressed that goal-kicks and goalie-punts had to go out toward the sidelines, not to work too hard with trying to dribble and control the ball anywhere within the penalty area but to blast it toward a sideline and make them start again, and for our offense to come back down the field and help gum up the other team on defense, and to hustle like they never have before.
It sucks getting hammered, and the morals of our society being what they, it’s frowned-upon to pull out a Glock and shoot the opposing coach after getting humiliated.
Well, the kids did me proud beyond belief. They scrapped and hustled, followed every direction to a T. They covered every open-man in corner-kicks, and sacrificed their bodies. We fought them tough, and we held our own. I was beyond-satisfied.
Final score was 2 to 1. How’bout it!!
