Mike Rowe has been railing on this for years. Employed trade school graduates earn far more than unemployed college grads, some with useless degrees. I was stunned to see that some oil field workers make $200,000 per year.

Wasn't it Rufus who previously posted that he don't normally talk with political science majors or philosophy majors, but when he does, he usually orders the Big Mac and fries!

It was Art History. Those oil field workers also spend time not working at all; not steady work. Sadly, a lot of trade schools got killed off in the 80's.
And this is why we also have all these problems with student loans -- there were no strings attached related to what the degree area was, whether you completed the degree, whether you found a job....kids going into degree areas where there were actual jobs at the other end should have gotten break and rewards based on areas, completion of degree, jobs gotten, etc. Whole system was set up to trap people forever, sort of like the credit card companies.......
BTW, Mike Rowe graduated from Towson University with a degree in communication studies, which is just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right...from Art History.

Mike Rowe was the host of "Dirty Jobs" for years, where he got down and dirty in some of the most nauseating jobs known to man. (Dirty Jobs is coming back for 2023). He is also the host and narrator for " Deadliest Catch", the Alaskan crab fishing industry, and I think he still is. He's also a Fox News and Fox Business contributor. He's pretty good at communications, and I'd guess he's pretty much financially comfortable.
But he still believes there are plenty of good livings to be made in the trades, where getting people to train for and take these thousands of jobs is really getting tough for employers. Today's trainees can make more than a journeyman did just 10 years ago. Getting pretty well paid while you train is a good deal, and with a union card, when one job is finished, the hall will place you in the next one.

All of which sort of runs counter to the point.

I can see forgiving loans for doctors, nurses and certain other degrees. But, paying off worthless degrees and people not using there degrees or not working, is BS. I don't think law degrees should get loan forgiveness either.

So you want argue just for the sake of argument? He worked tough jobs, then used his background in communications to get much better jobs, but it's not counter to the point; it is the point. He started out doing shitty jobs when his education background did not provide for a cushy job. Keeriste!! I'm sorry I mentioned it.

I was a average student and wasen't very interested in it. I became a aerospace machinist during the heyday af aerospace in southern Calif. Not a bad trade I liked my job most of the time.

That's sort of what I was trying to state - there should be incentives to go into areas of real need, that they get reduced interest loans over areas of no need, STEM over other stuff, but I'm not in favor of complete loan forgiveness for anyone. If you've got a job, you need to learn fast and early how to manage your finances for yourself! That should be a required course for all degree to graduate from college or even high school, and for that matter trade schools, too. People fail to plan for their own futures....and if you don't take care of that yourself, you're going to fail.
